Mr. Maryland "Merl" Bates died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at his home in Fairfield, Ohio. He was 76.

Funeral services are 12pm noon CT/1pmET. Friday, April 4, 2014 at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Cross officiating. Burial is in Whited Cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M. at the funeral home.



Mr. Maryland "Merl" Bates, Casey County, KY (1937-2014)


Born June 6, 1937 in Whitesburg, Letcher County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Hillard and Carrie Caudill Bates. He died Saturday, March 29, 2014, in Fairfield, OH. He was an auto body repairman.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Eads Bates, who died April 13, 2004; daughter, Norma Renee Bates; two brothers, Jerry and Wilmer Mitchum; and two sister, Gloria Dean Holden and Gardenia Downs.

Survivors include the following:
  • Two sons: Buddy and Mike Bates both of Fairfield, Ohio

  • Two daughters: Kaylin Marie Bates of Fairfield, Ohio and Virginia Gail Dilley of Tampa Bay, Florida

  • Four grandchildren

  • Three brothers; Maynard Bates of Cincinnati, Ohio; Jimmy Bates of Dunnville, KY and Richard Mitchum of Junction City, KY

  • And two sisters: Evon Barber of Junction City, KY' and Evelyn Gooch of Stanford, KY
Funeral arrangements entrusted to >McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, 752 Campbellsville Street, Liberty, KY.
