The Adair County Garden Club would like to invite you to join us for our monthly meeting. Sad word of the passing of Maerene Shirley

Maerene Shirley, age 82, a resident of Summit Manor Health and Rehab Center passed away suddenly Monday March 24, 2014 at 5:30 am at the Westlake Regional Hospital Emergency Room. She was the widow of Evan Shirley, who died on January 1, 1989. Preceded in death by a son: Udell Shirley on Friday, March 21, 2014. One son survives, Donnie Shirley, of Columbia, KY. A complete obituary will be posted later when received from Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

Josh Grant Earns 1st Place at Regional Skills Competition

Josh Grant is an 11th grade student at Adair County High School, the son of Denise Grant and Andy Grant; and the grandson of Joe and Annabelle Pyles and Richard and Beth Grant, all of Columbia, Kentucky.

Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center

On March 1, 2014, students from both Adair and Russell Counties traveled to Somerset, Kentucky, to represent the Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center in the Regional Skills Competition held at Somerset Community College and Pulaski County Area Technology Center. There were several counties represented during the contest, and students competed in the fields of Automotive, Carpentry, Electricity, Industrial Maintenance, and CNC Machining, as well as many other categories.

CU's Campaign for the Commonwealth kicks off in Elizabethtown

Campbellsville University is in the silent phase of the "Our Time, This Place: The Next Century Campaign for Campbellsville University" which will go public in about a year. Pledges for the campaign have reached over $31 million, which go toward new residence halls, salaries, creating new programs, new buildings for programs and improving the campus.

On Saturday, March 22, 2014, the Adair County Elementary School's Academic Team, coached by Lisa Newell-Hare and Jeana Pike, competed in Regional Governor's Cup Competition at Russell Springs Elementary School. Several students competed in written assessments with the Future Problem Solving Team coming out on top as they were named Future Problem Solving-Elementary KAAC Regional Governor's Cup Champions. Also, placing in regional competition was Elizabeth Cook taking 4th place in Written Composition. With these wins, ACES ended up in 4th place in total team points out of twelve schools competing.

On Tuesday March 18, 2014 all students in the ACHS class of 2014 participated in some form of job shadowing with members of the community. All students had the option to arrange their own shadowing experience in an area that they have an interest in as a future career. ACHS principal, Troy Young said, "We can't say enough about the incredible experiences that our students took part in last week. They returned to school very excited and were grateful for the opportunity. A big thank you goes out to everyone who took time out of their day on Tuesday to mentor our students!"

For profit group gets grant for tutoring goat and sheep herders

Two awards of interest to local vegetable growers and goat & sheep keepers were made Friday, March 21, 2014, by the the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board (KADB), chaired by Gov. Steve Beshear, which approved a total of $555,026 for 11 agricultural diversification projects across the Commonwealth during its March board meeting at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office.

Lee's Plant Farm, Inc. get loan for vegetable processing facility

Lee's Plant Farm Inc. was approved for a $60,000 loan in state funds. The funds will be used to construct and equip a 20' X 60' vegetable processing facility to be located on their farm in LaRue County.

CU students serve in farflung locations over spring break

Sixty students serve in six locations. They did everything from serving pancakes to those on the beach, to ministering to those in prison and teaching English to students in Belize. Greensburg student says highlight of her trip was talking to an atheist. 'He was genuinely interested in what we were saying, and I could tell he didn't want to leave. He didn't get saved, but we definitely planted a seed,' Jasmine Barnett said.

The weather in February and early March kept the Columbia/Adair County Utilities district busy maintain the system, halting new construction. On two days in early March, crews responded only to emergency situation, General Manager Lenny Stone told the board of trustees at their regular March 13, 2014, meeting. Stone cited an extraordinary number of meters needing replacing because of low temperature problems.
