Josh Grant Earns 1st Place at Regional Skills Competition

Josh Grant is an 11th grade student at Adair County High School, the son of Denise Grant and Andy Grant; and the grandson of Joe and Annabelle Pyles and Richard and Beth Grant, all of Columbia, Kentucky.

On March 1, 2014, students from both Adair and Russell Counties traveled to Somerset, Kentucky, to represent the Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center in the Regional Skills Competition held at Somerset Community College and Pulaski County Area Technology Center. There were several counties represented during the contest, and students competed in the fields of Automotive, Carpentry, Electricity, Industrial Maintenance, and CNC Machining, as well as many other categories.

In the welding division, there were two separate teams from LCATC consisting of three students each that competed in Welding Fabrication, two students that competed in Welding Sculpture, two students that competed in Welding, and two students that competed in the Job demonstration divisions.

Welding 1 contest is for students that are in the Welding Program for less than one (1) year. Joshua Grant was the only student from Adair County competing that day, and he won First Place beating out several other students and counties. With the skill and determination that Josh has displayed in my classroom, there was no surprise to learn that he had earned first place. It is a great reward for an educator to see a student show a passion and desire to learn a new idea and/or skill and then succeed at perfecting that skill. For Josh, welding just happens to be one of those desires. Steven R. Covey made the statement, "Some people listen not to understand but instead they listen to respond." Josh has been with me for a little over one semester, but he does just the opposite...Josh listens to understand. He has studied in the classroom and worked very hard in the shop to learn a new trade, which he can now use throughout his lifetime. I am extremely proud of Josh and his recent first place win at the Regional Competition. He earned it and has every right to smile big. Josh will next compete at the State level contest to be held in Louisville, Kentucky.
