Kentucky officials brace for snow and bitter cold

By Buddy Rogers
News from Kentucky State Government

FRANKFORT, KY (Jan. 4, 2014) - Weather forecasts for much of the Commonwealth have prompted Kentucky's emergency management officials to hold several conference calls with the National Weather Service (NWS) in preparation for another winter storm system approaching the state with bitter cold in the forecast.

After a brief warm up over this coming weekend, Arctic colder air will cause a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain before quickly turning to all snow by early evening Sunday.

110th Anniversary of Lindsey Wilson Training School is today

What would Columbia be like without Lindsey Wilson College? Though hard to imagine today, the great institution which appears solid as Gibraltar hasn't always had such a rosy outlook as today. 'Through all the adversity and roadblocks, however, strong leaders seemed always to emerge, men of courage, conviction, and faith who had a clear vision of Lindsey Wilson's destiny...' Jim writes in outlining Lindsey Wilson College's first 110 year history.

By JIM

"Columbia has enthusiastically embraced the greatest opportunity that has ever been presented her. We have been intensely interested and are now supremely happy." (The Adair County News, October 8, 1902, upon the occasion of Columbia being selected as the site of the Methodist training school.)

One hundred and ten years ago today, the future came to Columbia. On January 4th, 1904, the Lindsey Wilson Training School opened and changed Adair County forever. In early 1904, the population of Columbia had changed little from the 675 citizens enumerated in 1900, and the influx of students (and in many cases, their parents, who came to Columbia to be near their children) wrought powerful changes.

Charles Marshburn: Wants information to prevent pipe freezing

Charles Marshburn writes:
What can we do to protect those faucets and water pipes during this arctic freeze? I still can't see how global warming can cause such as we are experiencing. Charles Marshburn
Thanks - There will be more on protection from extreme cold weather shortly. There may be some proven science in it, so be forewarned, if that and the concept of gravity and the earth circling the sun are offensive to your persuasion. - EW

The COF: The weatherman and the Indians

Comments re article 64331 Weather report prognostication from north of the Green River

By the COF This little post brought ta mind a story thet went around the Round Table last year:

It's late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.

Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.
