Papaws were called 'Poor Man's Bananas'

Writer hasn't had papaws since her youth. Says, 'It would be something to have someone produce them for sale!'

By Von Price

I remember these very well...when I was growing up there was a neighbor that had a really big tree in their yard. No one lived in the house, so on our walk home from school we would stop and get some to eat.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Let silenced names, a sonnet

Let silenced names
- a sonnet for the broken-hearted
No other thought but word absurd might prod
unknowable to know unknowable
and seeking, gain a gait beyond the plod
of worker dwarfed by weeds unhoeable.

No other love but dire desire might stir
unlovable to love unlovable
and struggling, work to clarify the blur
of handiwork at last ungloveable.

No other passion but from gut might dare
unstoppable to stop unstoppable
and failing, still continue with a care
of satisfaction high unswappable.

Let silenced names, let names unnameable
now shout themselves unshamed unshameable.
- Robert Stone, 29 September 2013

Letter: Agrees with Carol Perkins

Mary Ann Brown writes:
I totally agree with you, Carol! Why do all businesses try to make the biggest profit from each item they sell? Looks like if they made a 25% profit on an item, isn't it better to move an item than let it set somewhere? Just my opinion. - Mary Ann Brown

Carol Perkins: The search for the next truck

The search for the next truck, a workingman's Dodge Ram 1500 has been fraught with frustration. Carol wonders why the purchase always takes one through the salesman's circles? Why a simple up or down quote can't be gotten.
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: A Matter of Taste. Posted September 22, 2013

By Carol Perkins

For the past month, Guy and I have been searching for a truck. Not just any truck, but a Dodge Ram 1500. We don't want a new one, but one that is purely for hauling and loading and unloading things such as mums, bags of mulch, and dirt. We want to be able to move junk from the basement to the landfill and then bring home a new door to replace the one I have been trying to get for more than a few years. In other words, we want a workingman's truck. Not that we can't find it, but we can't find a reasonably priced one.

Happy Tail: A priceless Jewel

After failing to fit in, to socialize properly with other dogs and lots of people - twice - in her first home, it looked as if the little tan dog's lifetime home might be at the rescue. But on a trip to the feed store, a stranger, a Veteran, asked about her. He lived alone and wanted a companion. Jewel looked like the answer. Click on headline for complete story and photo(s)
The next earlier Happy Tail: Happy Tail: What were you thinking? Posted September 22, 2013

By Peg Schaeffer

Sometimes I wish the dogs who come here could talk. But maybe it's better they don't. It's very rare that I know a dog's background. The majority of the dogs that come here are strays and unless they're born here I know very little about them. Most of the dogs could write a book about their lives, I'm sure, and it probably wouldn't be pretty.

Reflections of Youth: The Neighborhood Bunch

Carol Salato Myers remembers the kids she grew up with on High Street, West Guardian Street, and Burkesville Street

By Carol Salato Myers

Chris Murphy's Reflections from my past put me in a nostalgic mood. I find myself reflecting more and more on my youth and I remember the good times in our part of town. I guess one does that when quickly approaching old age. -

The Neighborhood Bunch

One of my fondest memories of growing up in the small town of Columbia was playing with the "Neighborhood Bunch." Those kids included all the kids on West Guardian Street, High Street, Church Street and Burkesville Street. There were a dozen of us: my brother, Mike, Mary Ellen Myers, Louis Merkley, Harlow Coomer, Ann Coomer, Carmen Potts, Billy Holt, Betsy Cheatham, Kenny Phelps, Steve Hill, Greg Hill, and I. I especially remember the summers and winters with the crew.

An Email From My Son

In his story "Picture It!" Chuck had written; As the days roll by here at Tallgrass Estates, it seems I am fully satisfied spending more and more time in my recliner, not reading or watching TV but just reminiscing the events that come to mind of a long and fulfilled life. I have pictures out my ears but I rarely refer to them. My best reminiscing is done when I have the TV turned off and lean back in my recliner and just let my mind wander through more than eighty well-lived years.

Doc Holliday and the Elephant

Matt Braun is one of my favorite western writers. I have decided that my fondness for him arises from his rather successful attempts to achieve verisimilitude -- that is to create the appearance of life as it actually was. The success of any writer's effort is not so much how closely he or she hews to the truth as it existed, rather how much the writer succeeds in convincing the reader that the writer hews to the way things were.
