I so enjoy the old photos that appear on CM, both those from before my time and those taken from an era I remember.

I especially enjoy photos from the early 1960's when my friends and I were oblivious to the fact that our lives would change so much as we grew up.

Men of the Columbia Christian Church, ca 1948-1952

LOCAL HISTORY: Columbia Christian Church
Click on headline for story with photo(s)

Mr. Richard Phelps sent the accompanying photo from Nancy Lowe Sims church photos and albums, and asks if readers will help identify the uncertain names. "I have been working on this for a little while trying to get all men identified. Maybe your lookers can help positively identify everyone and the ones that I have marked Uncertain," he writes.

"We think about the photo is ca 1950, and feel certain the date is in the 1948-1952 period, he continued. "World War II Vets are present and Korean Vets are present. Either the Korean War was not started at the time of the photo, or it was over and they were back. Not sure."

"Bob White is the only identified man still alive as far as anyone knows. Pretty amazing to me; many of these men would be about in there upper 80's as well if they were alive," he adds.

Fear of change another problem in Columbia, writer says

Kathryn Miller writes:
People don't show up after hours because they don't know that they are open later (on the few occasions they may have tried it). They need to advertise that they will be open certain hours starting on whatever date they choose - even if expanded hours are only a few nights per week.

You can't be afraid for things to change - yet another problem we have here in Columbia with regards to growth and development. In business you have to take somewhat of a gamble and give it a try. You can't just do nothing and expect results. --Kathryn Miller

Wants to know what happened to Maupin Barber Shop

Maury Lewis writes:
Did the little building get torn down or did it get absorbed by the bank as it grew. I do like to look at old pictures of Columbia. What years were the buildings like this. Was the theatre there when this was taken. I can see another building at the edge of the picture melewi - Maury Lewis
Thanks. The little building was absorbed. The Rialto Theatre, it is thought, was part of the shopping strip, I believe, but we'll wait for truly knowledgeable historians to speak to that. - Ed Waggenger
