Diana Long: No Roundup!

Diana Long writes:
No Roundup!! A large quantity is no good for the environment, especially for those people with health issues, and our livestock which eventually ends up on our tables. It's bad enough to look at the county roads all grown up due to the lack of mowing when needed; don't make it look worse by killing all the grass and weeds and make it an even worse eyesore. We Pay our taxes. Mow it! --Diana Long

Commentary: No to Roundup. No to any herbicide

'I don't think people realize just how far spray can drift from the area that is being sprayed, nor how much unnecessary spraying is done daily.' - JOYCE COOMER.

By Joyce Coomer
Guest Commentary

With all the information available for people to study relating to the devastation herbicides and pesticides can cause to our health, I am surprised everyone is not protesting the use of ANY herbicide, not just Roundup, by the government, utility companies and homeowners.

Please don't pollute our environment with a known carcinogen. Many people have respiratory reactions to sprayed chemicals, quite a few end up in emergency rooms for treatment. Including those already coping with asthma and COPD, putting them at higher risk for reaction. --Mary Keltner, RN

(Ad) Adair Farmers Market, Tues, Sept. 10, 2013 6am-10amCT

Holly Kerns has a great selection of produce. And Prof. Jeff Scott has some great apples at the Adair Farmers Market, Adair Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY at the Tuesday morning, September 10, 2013 session from 6amCT-10amCT.

By Holly Kerns and Prof. Jeff Scott
  • Holly Kerns, Sano, KY - Green Beans, some by the bushel. Green Tomatoes, for fried green tomatoes or pickling. Yellow Squash. Yellow Squash. Potatoes. Bell Peppers. Hot Banana Peppers. Cayenne Peppers. Eggplant. Acorn Squash. Pumpkins - both decorative and for cooking. Watermelons. MIXED GREENS. (See comments by Prof. Scott).
  • Professor Jeff Scott, Antioch, KY - Nice inventory of Apples. Today's, picked at the peak of perfection, Enterprise Apples. Melroses. An all around good Apple whose distinction everyone in Adair County knows: It's the state apple of Ohio. Comment on Holly's Mixed Greens: Last night we had the best cornbread we ever ate. They were crunchy on the outside and had a wonderful taste. I commented on them and Henrietta said the secret was she had used Cocanut Oil in their preparation. A secret to Mixed Green: The pot liquor, the soup, may be the best part, especially when eaten with cornbread like Henrietta makes. Hope y'all will try it, tonight. ALSO: If you come early, you'll see a wonderful sunrise over the Extension office. - JEFF SCOTT.
Any others - we sometimes have late arrivals - will be listed when they call.
