Commentary: No to Roundup. No to any herbicide

'I don't think people realize just how far spray can drift from the area that is being sprayed, nor how much unnecessary spraying is done daily.' - JOYCE COOMER.

Guest Commentary

With all the information available for people to study relating to the devastation herbicides and pesticides can cause to our health, I am surprised everyone is not protesting the use of ANY herbicide, not just Roundup, by the government, utility companies and homeowners.

I don't think people realize just how far spray can drift from the area that is being sprayed, nor how much unnecessary spraying is done daily.

If you don't have time to read the scholarly articles about herbicide dangers, at least read the labels on the products - that should be enough to convince anyone NOT to use herbicides and to request that other people don't use herbicides. I don't care if the label does say it's safe to use on your yard, can you find anyone who would drink a glassful of the herbicide?

A few dandelions never hurt a yard, nor does white clover or crabgrass. Johnson grass just laughs off herbicide use. If roadsides are mown at least twice a summer, that usually keeps the grass under control; this has been an unusually good summer for grass so the decision to consider the use of herbicides on the roadsides shouldn't even have been brought up this year.

I try to keep up with health issues and the information I'm seeing concerning just about any chemical you can name is getting scarier and scarier in terms of health woes. We have become too dependent on taking the easy way out instead of actually getting out and working to solve problems. - Joyce M. Coomer
