High level of support brings new sense of hope at Westlake

The list of volunteer services gets longer every day
Click on headline for story with photo(s)

A special statement Neal Gold, Volunteer Westlake Regional Hospita Administrator on the outpouring of community support for the institution. which, just this morning, saw the surprise appearance of workmen to complete a project paid for by a group of citizens who chose to remain anonymous. He writes:
"It was a wonderful surprise when I heard that a group of citizens wanted to anonymously help improve the appearance of the hospital by paying for the sealing and striping of several of the parking areas. It was an even more pleasant surprise when the truck from Brown's Striping and Sealing showed up unannounced yesterday. "Every day seems to bring a new level of support from the community and a new sense of hope for what our hospital can become.

"The list of volunteer services gets longer every day: free mowing from Lee Stephens for the hospital, reduced mowing fees from Jeremy Hancock for mowing at Westlake Primary Care, free roof patching by Melson Roofing, landscaping cleanup from the Adair County Road Department, landscape work done by employee Andy Loy on his own time, and the dedicated and continuing support of Marty Brown and the entire Hospital Auxiliary in operating the gift shop." - Neal Gold
If you want to help Westlake Regional Hospital, do so by contacting Mr. Gold or the Administrative Secretary, Cheryl Wall, at 270-384-4753. He's a Vice Chairman of the Adair County Hospital District Board of Trustees which also includes Chairman Craig Pyles, Treasurer Bruce White, Secretary Richard Grant, and Member Brad Keltner. The board meets the last Tuesday in each month at 6:30pmCT, in the hospital cafeteria, 901 Westlake Drive, Columbia, KY.

ACHS grad from New Hampshire rekindles friendship with classmate after 41 years

I just want Columbia Magazine its readers, residents of Columbia and Adair County to know that, in my opinion, Charles Grimsley is a great asset to all those concerned in the community and that I am proud to have had him as a classmate and for what he does for the town government. - BJ HAGY

By BJ Hagy

I recently took a road trip from New Hampshire down to Columbia and Adair County with my 26 year old son, Robert. It had been many years since we had visited. I wanted my son to see where I'd attended school (ACHS & Knifley Grade Center) and where I'd grown up in my early years.

When we got into Columbia we walked around the square and came by Grimsley's Jewelry store. I told my son that I had gone to school with Charles but hadn't seen him since 1972.

Robert Cummings comments: on bushwhacking

Robert Cumming writes:
In regard to the "bushwacking" of parkway right-of-way "volunteer" scrub vegetation, it is done in the interest of traffic safety as well as a deterrent to illegal clandestine marijuana planted along public roads. BTW I miss seeing the smoky, craggy, sinkhole rock outcrops along the overgrown cedar west bound parkway lane at Gradyville in the winter. - Robert Cumming
