Jon Halsey: Smoke free pizzeria is proof democracy is working

But he insists any business ought to be able to structure business as they see fit

Jon Halsey writes:
Another fine example of democracy working the way the Founders intended.

Individual owners deciding how they want to structure their business instead of faceless statist bureaucrats mandating from afar.

It is a source of constant wonderment that we can demand the right to take our business wherever we want but insist on denying the right for business to determine how they want to do business. Once we start down this road, the ridiculous extremes that these misguided regulations can reach is evident in Michael Bloomberg's New York. One of the first to ban smoking, New York city now bans not only large size soft drinks but also food donations to homeless shelters because the City can't analyze the salt, fat content. So Groceries and Restaurants have to throw the food out rather than donating it. So much for "the slippery slope" of the "Nanny State."

Hats off to the proprietors and best wishes for their success. --Jon Halsey, Knifley

One isn't forced to eat carbohydrates -

Rodney Smith writes:
You can limit the amount of pizza, carbohydrates, and calories you take in, but if people are smoking around you, in a public place, you can't limit the amount of smoke inhaled. Eating too much pizza harms only the person indulging in it, as second hand smoke harms others that are around them. --Rodney Smith

Campbellsville ready to show off city to 30,000, July 4th

Guest editorial: The preparation for event is a lesson which should cross county lines.

By Larry Smith, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications
Personal Editorial Commentary

Campbellsville is really sprucing up, not altogether for the big Fourth of July - one of the biggest in America - for sure for a city of our size, but it will be ready to show off to as many as 30,000 who may show up for the celebration.

Campbellsville Mayor Tony Young says that doing the little things, like making showplaces of alleyways is good for the economy. "It helps when we recruit professionals and businesses to move to our city," he said.

June 26th occasions a large number of anniversaries

Today is a big day in Birthdays on ColumbiaMagazine.com - with 29 entries as of 6:40amCT, Wednesday, June 26, 2013 in CM's Birthdays list. The big news is the number of anniversaries, perhaps a record, with seven listed today.

There may be more. If readers know of anyone with a birthday or anniversary in the 7-County area of Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor who should be listed, we'd like to add them.

If you have a celebration to submit, send it using any Contact/Submit button. It's easiest for us if birthdays are sent one entry at a time, on the day of the birthday.
Br> But sometimes, that doesn't work for the send. Next best is to check the two month CM Birthdays calendar, now May-June and then send any missing birthdays, 1 at a time per email. Entries are scheduled to reappear each year as posted, until we're notified otherwise. Thanks for supporting our Birthdays Advertisers. They make the list possible.

Another ring mystery: Who lost 1966 ring at JAIS?

Another case for The (or A) Ring Detective
Click on Headline for item, photo(s)

Another Class Ring Mystery has been sent to us by Tricia Janes, who writes:
While moving classrooms at John Adair Intermediate School today (Tuesday, June 25, 2013 - CM) we found an old class ring. We do not believe it is from Adair County. It is hard to tell what is on the stone but it looks like it could be Abraham Lincoln or another male figure. The stone is red and the year on the side is 1966. There are two initials on the inside. If you believe it is yours call 270-250-9315 and tell me the initials on the inside and I will gladly make sure you get it back. -Tricia Janes
On Sunday, Coach Dave Grigsby of Lindsey Wilson College's Cycling Team published what is fast becoming an all-time classic story, Comments re article 60305 High school ring comes full circle Success after 10 year quest, one we'll be referring to many times in the future.

That story was followed up with a letter from Martha Berry about her long lost Columbia High School ring which was lost, found, and lost again - the last time on Lindsey Wilson's campus, somewhere around the Administration building. She still has hope that one day that ring will be found and returned to her. That story can be read at Martha Berry: The Return of the Ring a wonderful story.

It would be wonderful if Happy Endings could be written for the last two stories. Maybe more clues will be uncovered. One would wonder if that class ring found at John Adair Intermediate School was worn by a teacher or substitute sometime after 1966. One would wonder if the Lincoln or Lincoln-esque figure on the ring would not be a clue? It's intriguing. While we're waiting, we've posted the JAIS lost ring in For other Lost & Found Items, see CM LOST & FOUND and hope to have a similar ad posted for Martha Berry's long lost Columbia High School Ring.

Perhaps the case might even inspire THE Ring Detective, Dave Rigsby, to take on the case. Perhaps someone will know of a short cut to identifying the school the JAIS ring came from or know of a device which find the ring, or invent a micro chip to be imbedded in a ring to make it almost impossible to lose. Perhaps someone will create an App to plug in known clues and churn out likely scenarios. Perhaps the FTS at Adair County High School has the answer. Stay tuned. The possibilities are intriguing.

Heather Evans says snake appears to be Eastern Milk snake

Comments re photo 50144 Snake ID? What kind?

Heather Evans writes:
The picture isn't the best quality but from the pattern it appears to be an Eastern Milk Snake. They are harmless, eat mice and venomous snakes, and I have one as a pet! - Heather Evans
Thanks, Heather Evans: Appreciate the information and the good word about the good work so many snakes perform. I guess it's understood, but a note should also be made that it's not advisable for anyone who isn't expert in snake ways to make a pet of a snake and to know many people confuse copperheads, a very poisonous snake with harmless snakes and vice versa. - EW
