The Town Board spoke: Is 8mph law still on Columbia books?

Amen, Bro. JIM, Editor Murrell. Plenty fast enough, for bicycles, too - CM

By JIM

With the propensity of many drivers to treatpedestrians on and near Columbia's Public Square as a veritable feast of bowling pins, perhaps the Powers That Be should scrutinize the books to determine if the century-old ordinance below is still in effect. If it is, the city coffers would be filled to overflowing in less than a fortnight, and those riding shanks' mare could cross the streets with considerably less fear and trepidation.

From the July 16, 1913 Adair County News:
"It has been ordained by the Town Board that eight miles an hour for automobiles and motorcycles in the corporate limits of Columbia is as fast as any machine can be run. Five dollar fine for the first violation, ten for the second and so on."

(Five dollars, adjusted for five-score years of inflation, would be about $115 today, "and so on.")

As always, comments and constructive criticism welcome. Please address charges of "too eagerly reaching for a conclusion" directly to:
Mr. John Ed Murrell, Editor de facto
Adair County News
South corner of the Square
Columbia, Ky.

After months of planning and dozens of volunteer hours committed, the Adair County Beef IRM committee is happy to announce the completion of the Adair County Cattlemen's Feeder Cattle Protocol. The program was designed to improve the health and performance of feeder cattle and tap market premiums producers can attain by pre-conditioning calves prior to selling. During the development, input was sought by numerous industry experts including local and UK veterinarians, stockyard facilities, cattle buyers, the Kentucky Beef Network, UK beef specialists, and of course local producers. Stockyards in both Russell and Taylor Counties have agreed to accept and promote feeder calves which have been certified by the program.
