Sharon Whitehurst: On Dooryards

Maury Lewis made right assumptions
Click on headlines for complete essay with photo(s), link(s)

By Sharon Whitehurst

Maury Lewis has come up with a pretty good definition of 'dooryard' a term which natives of New England and upstate New York [my heritage] readily understand.

We use it in the way that my English blog friends speak of a 'garden,' meaning the intimate and adjoining outdoor surroundings of one's house.

When one lives in a rural/farm setting the dooryard is the tidy area that is kept mowed and trimmed; its where ornamental shrubs and perennials are planted as opposed to pasture or areas where outbuildings stand which are more roughly kept.

Most of the photos I share on CM and on my blog are taken from my 'dooryard.'

Maury Lewis writes:
I love to read the articles Mrs. Whitehurst writes. She's always mentioning the dooryard and I have never heard that expression before. I would assume it is the yard just outside the back door or any door you go out at her house. If I am not right, let me know, Mrs. Whitehurst. Have we seen pictures of your dooryard?
