Memory of a favorite advertiser at the EHN

By Geniece Marcum

The late John Wes England, a prominent real estate agent, is still fondly remembered around Metcalfe County for his good nature, wit and humor. and came into the Edmonton Herald News office one day and announced, with put-on sternness, "Girls, you've made a mistake on my ad." We braced ourselves, because, unlike some, John Wes never complained. We knew it had to be bad.

Miss Ruth Van Zant, Becky Pedigo and I grabbed papers to check what had been printed. Where he bad advertised acreage with pond stocked with fish, we printed "pond stacked with fish."

We prepared for the possible request for a discount, as we knew one of his colleagues would do - and regularly did - for the least infraction. But when John Wes saw how chagrin we were, that trademark smile broke across his face, "Did get me lots of attention, though," he said, and left as gently as he came. - GENIECE MARCUM

COF: Good time had by all celebrating Hogmanay in Knifley

Appears epidemic of Scottishness about in Knifley. Scotch/Adair Countians celebrate New Years like they in Edinburgh - not the real one in Johnson/Bartholemew/Shelby Counties, Inda anna - but the plaid one in a so-called UK - not the UK that excels in bugs, and tries real hard - bless their hearts - in basketball or the real one, site of the University of Knifley; no, this was like the one the UK of Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Englad Too big a time was had by all, celebrating Hogmanay in otherwise sublime Northern Adair County, KY.

By the COF

Well Sir, out here on the point o' the ridge we survived another Hogmanay. The year ahead peers to be undecided as our "first footers" were Ian en Donaline.

Now Ian fits some o' the tradition see'ng as how he is tall, not a sawbones, preacher or a grave digger. 'ppears he does't hae enny eyebrows ta speak of so they certainly ain't gonna meet in the middle. He is a wee bit on the swarthy side - but thet han'some part....Well hits well known Donaline ain't nevah been able ta see much further then her nose. Being the first ta cross the threshold, Ian brought a nice large slab of weathered oak and laid hit on the fire, but being Scots, barn en razed he 'lowed as how hit seemed more fittin' fer the host ta provide ta other. So Miz Emily, being kinda put on the spot, let me brang out the hawf en spread a wee dram about.

Makin' sure they left by the opposite door, the Mizzus en I raised our elbows one more time afore we retired for the night. Tried to convince her thet Hogmanay continues on to the next mornin' but she ain't havin' it.

All in all, seein' as how Ian met most o the regulations en een if'n he did lay down a chunk o oak stead o coal, I'm still ahopin' fer a decent year as I cross over ta a New Year leavin' three score en ten behind.

To all o' the CM family:

A guid New Year to ane an a' And mony may ye see.

Nuggets of Information: Patterns from 2010 census figures

Nuggets of Information: Facts to sate the Perpetual Nine Year Olds of all ages

A look at the Wikipedia Entries for Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell, and Taylor Counties yielded these interesting population growth figures from the 2010 census for the first decade of the 21st Century:
  • Adair County, 8.2%
  • Russell County, 7.7%
  • Taylor County, 6.9%
  • Casey County, 3.3%
  • Metcalfe County, 0.6%
  • Green County, - 2.3%
  • Cumberland County, - 4.1%
Any comments on the factors which created these figures welcome, as are predictions on factors which will change the order when the 2020 Census is done. One factor could be how the new highway systems will affect the growth of Cumberland County, as it is discovered, and when the dramatic makeover Greensburg/Green County has undergone in recent years will start to pay big dividends.
