Poetry by Robert Stone: Something new

Something new
- sonnet recalling his mother's wanting to hear
No what to do is bother for the young
who seize the momentary chances near
until society with flaming tongue
begins to structure what to love or fear.

No space to live concerns the flown from nest
who glory in their seeking worlds afar
until survival meets a crucial test
resulting in a change of make or mar.

No time to love is worry for the old
who catch the opportunities each day
until approaching weakness takes firm hold
releasing bonds that can no longer stay.

These things called work and play are exercise,
the learning something new to recognize.

- Robert Stone, 9 December 2012

Chuck Hinman: Merry Christmas, Mom, from your son, Chuck

Chuck Hinman: IJMA: 030-R: Merry Christmas, Mom, from your son, Chuck
A dollar gift from son to mother in the 1930s becomes a prized possession passed on to good friends: The Tale of the Red Plate. This is a revised version of the 2008 story on CM. The next earlier Chuck Hinman Story: - IJMA 126: When Someone You Love Takes Their Life

By Chuck Hinman

Merry Christmas, Mom, from your son, Chuck

It's kind of early Christmas eve, too early to go to bed, the football game isn't very interesting, and frankly, I am lonesome at this time of year without Connie. I realize I am not the only one for which Christmas can be a very lonesome experience. But it is relatively new for me. You see Connie passed away a few days after Christmas last year.

Want to build attendance at your event: We'll help. Free!

The events listing for Today is big and the feature keeps growing. Send your Event today using any CM Contact/Submit button.
Since adopting this suggestion for Events entries, there's great news: 1) The Site is receiving a record number of Events in our format, and 2) The Site is receiving record number of Events in our format, and, for the moment, it's an overwhelming effort to give access to CM to those submissions which need 20 or 30 minutes additional attention to post. We have been able to keep up with, we think, all the submissions which follow the procedure, and to submit with all the requisite information to a comma. Working together, we'll be able to make CM Events pay off in a big way for more people. We're trying to get all the important Events posted, and if we haven't posted yours after 2 business hours, give a call at 270-250-2730. Ed Waggener
If you've never successfully submitted before, read the following first

By Ed Waggener
Site News from CM: ColumbiaMagazine.com

Even if you plan a lengthy, in-depth article, it helps keep the focus on, and build, attendance to write the Event first and submit it as early as possible. We can link to your longer story, when it arrives, which multiplies the publicity.

The CM trade secret is simple: CM Events are designed for busy people. They are concise, tightly edited, and give answers needed to get to an Event, all in one central place - CM Events. So far it's worked to "Put Content First and the Advertising will Come." Thanks to everyone for that.

Carol Perkins: The Concert

It would have been a great night, even worth $80 a person, but $243.00 each was too much to pay for concert tickets even for special Christmas presents, she writes. She made a statement, but artist - read to end of column for his name - will never know the difference

Jon (our son) called with his Christmas wish. "That's all I want. Nothing else. It would be so cool to take Luke (nine) to his first real concert. He went to some silly boy band concert that Beth took Eme to see, but not to a REAL concert. I told him to wipe that night out of his mind. If you can get tickets for us, that would be great. I think they are around eighty dollars."

The next earlier Tom Chaney column: Tom Chaney: Images of Mammoth Cave

A Mirror Up to Life

When I was teaching college freshman how to write - a process not fraught with a great deal of success - one of my favorite essays to use for a model was by Tennessee Williams entitled "The Timeless World of a Play." I've not read it for years, but I still remember one example he gives to illustrate how theatre gives us a chance to step out of the pressure of life to contemplate what we cannot remove ourselves from in the reality of time.
