LEBANON, KY - Preliminary Autopsy results indicate that Marion County Deputy Sheriff Carl Anthony Rakes died from injuries sustained from two gunshot wounds located in the abdomen and upper torso area. A final autopsy report will be released at a later date. - TFC WM. GREGORY

New Bridge on Walnut Grove Road nearly complete



2012-11-14 - Walnut Grove Road, Adair County District 3, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Adair County Roads Superintendent Jobe Darnell reported to Fiscal Court Tuesday night that this bridge on Walnut Grove Road lacks only the completion of the new bridge approaches to be put into use soon. Darnell had high praise for the Adair County Regional Jail inmates who did the concrete finish work. Walnut Grove Road connects KY 704 near Hadley's Community Church with the Chance Community. In the foreground is the dry bridge being replaced. The stream makes a second crossing on the road, which will still utilize an existing dry bridge. Wilham appointed to KY Commission on Proprietary Education

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 13, 2012) - Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed Harold G. Wilham, of Columbia, KY, to the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education. Wilham is the owner of Lake Cumberland CDL Training School Inc. He represents privately owned for-profit postsecondary technical schools. Wilham shall serve for a term expiring July 21, 2013.

The Kentucky Commission for Proprietary Education was established by action of the 2012 Kentucky General Assembly; it replaced the Board of Proprietary Education. The commission is charged with licensing and regulating all proprietary schools, doing business in Kentucky, other than those that offer a four year bachelor's degree. In addition it administers the Student Protection Fund which reimburses eligible students in the event a school closes, loses its accreditation or discontinues a program. The work of the commission is funded entirely through fees paid by licensed institutions.

Mid-South Conference Football academic awards announced

Lindsey Wilson tied for second most members

COLUMBIA, KY - A total of 19 football student-athletes earned Academic All-Mid South Conference honors for Lindsey Wilson this season.

Among the Blue Raiders honored were Charlie Mullennex, Trey Knecht, Caleb Bogard, Ryan Locker, Dakota Cogdill, Tanner Strein, Jake Vulhop, Matt Powers, Austin Shirley, Shane Latham, Chase Simpson, Keith Couch, Branden Cresap, Jeff Boards, Corrion Cooper, Jon Smith, Mark Corbett, Jake Lawrence and Lee Sutton.

Cumberland University (Lebanon, TN) led the way with 31 total members, followed by Lindsey Wilson College and Bethel University (McKenzie, TN) tied with 19.

In order to be nominated by an institution, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved at least sophomore academic status. The all-conference team awards will be announced on Thursday, November 15, 2012. - Charles Balcom

The Annual Extension Leadership Appreciation Banquet is at 6:30pmCT, Thursday, November 15, 2012, Lindsey Wilson College's Roberta Cranmer Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt Drive, Columbia, KY. The event recognizes outstanding volunteers and leadership given to the UK Cooperative Extension Service, and is sponsored by the Adair County Extension Council.

Guest Speaker is John Hancock, an Adair County native, who currently serves as the KY AgrAbility Project Director. Kentucky AgrAbility provides education and technical assistance to agriculture operators and farm families who face the challenges of a disability. LEBANON, KY - 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp has been charged with Murder - Police Officer in the death of 31-year-old Marion County Deputy Sheriff Carl Anthony Rakes. Shipp is currently being transported to University Hospital in Louisville where he is being treated for a self inflicted gunshot wound. It is unknown when he sustained the wound.

An autopsy will be performed on Deputy Raikes today at the Medical Examiner's office in Louisville. - TFC WM. GREGORY

The Adair County Fiscal Court held a lengthy Tuesday, November 13, 2012 but fast paced meeting which lasted 2:13 minutes, with several important issued during the session, including the firing of 911 employee James O. Absher, who faces criminal charges; moving ahead to advertise for bids for a Total Patcher system and getting ready to purchase a new tractor and Bushhog system by April of 2013, appointing two new Adair Hospital District trustees; taking care of two Adair Extension District board member appointments, and re-opening the 911 Board action involving the dismissal of towing operators Paul Reynolds and Ernie Harper from the rotating call list.

Marion Co., KY Deputy dies of gunshot wound Nov. 14, 2012

Area joins law enforcement members in mourning death of six year veteran Marion County Deputy Anthony Rakes, killed in the line of duty. Suspect, DeWayne Shipp, 49, was later arrested in the limits of Campbellsville, KY, on a traffic stop by Kentucky State Police and officers of the Campbellsville Police Department. Shipp was taken to Taylor County Regional Hospital in Campbellsville, KY, for treatment of a leg injury

LEBANON, KY - The Kentucky State Police are currently investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at approximately 2amET this morning. The incident occurred when Marion County Deputy Anthony Rakes initiated a traffic stop on a 2007 KIA.

Deputy Rakes was shot during the stop and died at Springview Hospital in Lebanon, KY, while in surgery.
