Adair County Historian

Outside of my immediate family, Emma Lloyd is one of the first people of whom I have a memory. Having known her all my life, I had not seen her in some years and the family have our sympathies; I know she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Our mother and Aunt Ella loved her very much.

In the late 1960s or very early '70s, there was a photo spread in the Columbia, KY, Daily Statesman on the Cundiff post office with postmaster Emma Lloyd and rural carrier McKinley "Preach" Hoover.

Carol Perkins: Special eligibles trip - Part III, Jamaica and more

A stop in Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel where shrewd Metcalfe County trading skills net '$3,500' tanzanite ring, for $100. Along with a brief stop in 'Hell.'
The previous Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Part II: Special eligibles trip - on board the Conquest

By Carol Perkins

To continue my cruise saga, our first port-of-call was Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Rather than book a tour through the ship, we planned to hire a local guide with a bus so we could cover more territory. As we stood inside the terminal after getting off the ship, a group of six ladies from Alabama approached us about sharing a bus and a guide, so we did. Not much interested in the local scenery, they were specifically looking for knock off purses.

COLUMBIA, KY - Two new members were inducted Saturday into the Lindsey Wilson Athletic Hall of Fame.

Chris Dickerson, who played basketball from 1987-90, and the late Jim Voight, who coached men's basketball from 1970-73, were inducted at a morning ceremony at William T's at the Pines at Lindsey Wilson. Dickerson - a Bardstown, Ky., native who now lives in Louisville, KY - is one of 11 LWC men's basketball players to score at least 1,000 career points. He finished his 2-1/2 year career with 1,270 points - the fourth most in program history - and still holds the LWC single-season scoring average record, set in 1989-90 with 20.8 points.

LWC won its first athletic national title in 1972 when Voight guided the men's basketball team to the National Little College Athletic Association championship. He finished his coaching career with more than 600 career wins. He died in 2003 at the age of 67. - Duane Bonifer. Lindsey Wilson College

Reliford molasses making brings back memories

'I am sure that many of the older folks in Columbia will remember my dad's , Otha Flatt's, molasses for sure. His was the real deal.' Von Flatt Price
Comments re photo 47178 Sorghum making time at Weed Adair Co KY

By Von Price

Oh the good old days! Remember them well. My dad, Otha Flatt, used to make molasses every year.

We raised our own cane. We had the old mill that you feed the cane stalks thru to remove the juice; had a mule that went round and round and oh that poor mule would just keep going and going.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Glimpses of, a sonnet

Glimpses of
- a sonnet of finding one's way
Back home was easy on the well-known way
but close another path had sparkling charms.
I wished and puppy-like played through the day
forgetting comfort of restraining arms.

I found a multitude of avenues
but too much fun disoriented mind.
I wished and cat-like saw the royal views
remembering authority is blind.

A trail late found will lead no farther on
but gives sad glimpses of a better track.
I wished and horse-like raced till time was gone
desiring well-placed win-inducing whack.

From dawn to dusk, from birth to death, our voice
will rise and fall until our final choice.

- Robert Stone, 21 October 2012

Fall Color Album from Carley Fudge, Breeding, KY

A very special Fall Color album was sent to us by Carley Fudge and attached to this page.

The pictures were taken on the Fudge Family Farm in Breeding, KY, off KY 61 South.

Carley has critiqued the area and writes, "Some of the best fall colors start in Flatwoods on the new KY 61 and go through Breeding and on into Cumberland County."

If there has ever been a more beautiful Fall, few can remember one quite so breathtaking as this one continues to be.

Sorghum Molasses making on Weed Ridge

For the Loys, from off, it was a special privilege to be a part of a centuries old production process. It will be always an unforgettable memory, being at Pete and Steve Reliford's beautiful farm, at the very Top of the World, on a crisp fall, taking in the scenery, watching the fascinating manufacture, and being treated to the best lunch any sorghum mill hands ever had: Patty Reliford's Chicken & Dumplings with Peach Cobbler. It couldn't have been better at the Pendennis Club.

We were able to be spectators to a lost art, the making of sorghum molasses.

This event took place on the farm of Pete and Steve Reliford. They were gracious hosts to many people and allowed a few to sit at the picnic table with the Mayors of Weed, KY, the capitol of Weed Ridge.

Kentucky Color - Greenbriar

It's a beautiful plant, and there are two kinds in our parts. And author says, 'As an aside and to the best of my ability to determine these things mathematically, Greenbriar Ridge is the Geographic center of Common Greenbriar Habitat for North America.' And he has a dire warning for unsuspecting who might experience a close encounter with the Common Greenbriar's cousin, Sawbriar

Common Greenbriar is a most beautiful plant that grows along roadsides and trails, in fencerows, and about anywhere it can find a little direct or filtered sunlight. It is a climber and uses tendrils to attach itself to other plants, vines and trees that will support its ascension upward toward sunlight.

What Makes Men Cry
Memorable Cries of Chuck Hinman

Yesterday, our preacher, Brother Tom Cox preached on the subject "The Tears of Jesus." His introductory remarks included something we all know, women cry easier than men. I reminisced briefly on what brought on the few of my own memorable cries. Three "barn burners" came to mind and I decided to write them sometime. Meanwhile, back to his sermon....
