A House for Sally Hall & Family: Fry, KY quick build project

2012-09-22 - Fry, Green Co., KY - Photo by Larry Smith.
Inspired by Mary's House
the Cane Valley Christian Church project to provide a new home for Mary McGuffin and her seven children, the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church congregation of Green County put together a project to build a new house for Sally Hall & Family, high up on Fry Ridge, at the site of the old Fry Post Office. The project was started this morning, Saturday, September 22, 2012, and by around 2pmCT, the house was already under roof. Some 200 workers total, were on the scene during the day with trades persons and lay builders rallied from Green, Metcalfe, Adair, Marion and as far away as Casey County to pitch in on the project. In the afternoon, drywall was already being hung on the interior. The roofers, silhouetted above against blue sky, wanted no personal credit, saying they were just doing God's work. I've never witnessed anything quite like this in my life. - Larry Smith, 97.2 The WAVE radio

Poetry by Robert Stone: Sonnet for Autumn

Sonnet for Autumn
The late September leaves were changing hues,
the annual hinting of October's cues
that living things would soon be leaving clues
of life again while winter resting still.
And now it is once more September late,
another year has passed and all await
the color fade and then the dormant state
with warmth enough to just survive the chill.
Between these changing seasons we have done
perhaps too little or perhaps too much.
The longer nights expect the setting sun
and settle into shadows, dreams, and such.
The shorter days demand an earnest run,
a hearty enterprise, a gentle touch.
- Robert Stone, 28 September 2008

Bliss News: Top speed chase stops man fleeing on motorized cart

By Victoria Browning Pike

Well, Ed missed the biggest news story of the year. I tried to get him twice to report a motorized cart from Walmart heading south on the new highway at top speed being chased by the police with blue lights blinking.

The cart gave out in front of Kenny Bennett's house and it was all over. I was mowing and wasn't able to get pictures, but it sure was funny.

History with Mike Watson: The Dug Hill

There is more than one Dug Hill in Adair County, today. The one in the news lately, given notoriety by B.J. Fudge, has followed more than one path. Early history on the Dug Hills was hard to come by, but the writer had the benefit of the reliable wisdom handed out at Gilbert Smith's store, where Civil War stories, lost gold on the hill, and other tales abound. Dug Hill became a really big deal in the New Deal when it was major Adair County WPA project. And then there's the very fine Dug Hill on KY 206, above Eunice, KY. There's all this and more in this Adair County history masterpiece. -CM

By Mike Watson

The modifications on the Dug Hill, on highway 704, this summer, which Billy Joe Fudge's progress photographs and several stories on Columbia Magazine, detailing experiences on that scenic stretch--or twist--of highway, have prodded a bit of research. Urged by several not-so-old friends, Lewis Jessee being first among them, I collected some of the facts/stories from childhood, having lived a mere stone's throw from the top of that dangerous and exciting stretch of road. This is complete by no means, merely a "jumping off place", pun intended.
