Historic Adair County Courthouse: What was this event?

2012-07-14 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from collection of Mike Watson. Mike Watson writes: Here is a photo from my collection. The only identification on theback is: 1930s or early 1940s. The photo was taken from the the building on the corner, commonlyknown to many of us as the Lerman Brothers' Building, and likely froma second floor window.

The huge crowd of people are all the way around in front of Russell &Company, the Rialto, and the Bank of Columbia. It appears those onthe Burkesville Street side of the courthouse and nearer the buildingare sitting. This made me think it might have been the 1942 dedicationof the DAR marker which is on the lawn on that side. However, the marker wasdedicated on Flag Day and I do not see any flags anywhere. Can anyone more accurately date the photo and identify the occasion? - MIKE WATSON

JIM/Mike Watson: The DAR Marker mystery solved

The following is a follow up to the photo of the DAR marker on the Courthouse lawn, which appeared in CM on 4 July 2012... Submitted by Mike and Jim

By JIM

Following is a bit of the history of the DAR Marker, located on the Courthouse lawn, dedicated in June 1942, on Flag Day, in honor of the Revolutionary War veterans who helped settle Adair County. It is interesting to note that this was soon after the United States had become officially embroiled in the Second World War, the attack on Pearl Harbor having been a mere six months previous.

Sorry, folks, 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer no longer available

Jean Quinn just called, to let us know that a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer she advertised was sold in 2 hours after a four line text ad was posted on ColumbiaMagazine.

"You can remove it," she said, "a young man came to buy after his father saw the ad and told he'd better go buy it before someone else did."

That may have set a record, of sorts, for selling a truck on CM.

In any case, we're grateful to know we can retire Classified Ad No. 10227, with honor, for doing its job so well. And thanks, Jean Quinn, for helping us keep CM Classifieds current - a big reason why they simply work, well, and QUICK! But of course, we'll have to work to find another truck to take its place. -EW

Mary's House drive surpasses $10,000 of $40,000 goal!

Group's target is $40,000 by August 1, 2012
Click on headline for story with photo's)

from Fran Neat and the Mary's House committee

We are well on our way. Donations are coming in at a quickening pace. The total cash received as of Friday evening, July 13, 2012, stood at over $10,000. That still leaves just a little less than $30,000 to go, so we still need your help! We've received checks from many places. One church sent $1,000. An individual in Lexington sent $500. Churches, organizations, and individuals from all over Adair County and far beyond are pitching in; we are determined to be ready to start by the deadline we set.

About the project

Cane Valley Christian Church, along with a group of concerned citizens, is raising money to build a new house for Mary McGuffin, a single, working mother with seven children, whose house recently burned. All donations will be escrowed until 100% of the funds are raised. Land and labor have already been donated. Checks are to be made to Cane Valley Christian Church Benevolence Fund with a memo of "Mary's House." Please make all donations by August 1 so that construction can begin. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the people listed below: Jim Flowers - 634-1696; Melissa Fudge - 634-3603; Don Neat - 250-1512; Larry Neat - 789-7830; Debbie White - 384-5481

We invite you to join us in this endeavor to provide Mary and her children with a new home. Many people are "on board" and very eager to help God bless Mary through this building project. God uses people, and He wants to bless others through you. As you respond to His prompting, you will be blessed! You may send your donations to either of the following: - MELISSA FUDGE, 480 Fire Department Lane, Breeding, KY 42715; - DEBBIE WHITE, 501 Beechtop Road, Columbia, KY 42728 Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, - Larry Neat, Chairman, Home Building Project

Jon Halsey suggests new search tool for CM

Jon Halsey writes:
While searching for an obituary published earlier this year it occurred to me that it would be extremely helpful to be able to search the archive by name. Is that a future possiblilty?

I would think genealogists, or nosy busybodies like myself. would be especially appreciative.

Given young Pen's multiplicity of talents I would think if it could be done - he could do it. - Jon Halsey
Thanks, Jon Halsey: It's ironic how great minds (yours and Pen's) work the same way. I'd never thought of this possibility, but Pen announced just a few days ago that he's working basically this idea. Archival research availability was a goal of CM early on, but with the accelerated growth in up to the minute news, financial resources have held back this aspect. (My job is to find sponsors to pay for and make innovations possible - but that looks probable). I like the idea because it will save so much time for our readers. That's a primary goal here. We'll let readers know when the search is ready.
