Agrees with Jon Halsey on voting

Missy Richard writes:
I agree with Mr. Halsey. I have learned for myself what a privilege it is to be able to vote on things that affect me, my family and community. I truly feel that not voting is a slap in the face to all the men and women who serve our country for the freedoms that we have today, One of my fears is that in the near future our privileges that we have will disappear. Those that sit and complain about everything, but do not vote or try to help to make change do not have the right to complain; they are part of the problem. - Missy Richard

The rest of the story of Church of Nazarene Church Bell

The bell came from a building at the Foot of Jamestown Hill, a building which antedates the 310 Jamestown Street (now Praise Assembly of God home) location of the First Church of the Nazarene. The bell is historic icon, bringing back memories of a remarkable member's quiet long kept secret act which provided continuity after a disastrous fire

By Chris Bennett

Actually this bell did not originate from the former Nazarene church located at 310 Jamestown Street. This bell was located in the first Columbia Nazarene church located at the foot of Jamestown hill in the vicinity of the consignment shop that is located in the old Convenient Food Mart building. That church burned to the ground, and the bell was one of the only things salvaged from the fire. The congregation moved up the hill into the church building that is now a Praise Assembly of God Church, until they built the new church by the Cumberland Parkway, in the early 1970's.

Identities of daughters now added to photo

Mike Watson writes:
Thank you Joyce Reeder for sending this photo to CM! I was thrilled to see a photo of my kin that I'd not see before!! William Allen "Bill" Watson and Araminta "Minnie" Bunch were our great-grandparents (Steve, Stanley, and I), and their only son, Milton, was our grandfather--I have never before seen a photo of our grandfather as a young man!!

The daughters, from left to right in photo, were: Lilly, who married Mont Petty (her daughter, Ella Hazel Petty Bunch, died only recently,); second is Ella, who married Eli A. Rabon, (Aunt Ella, as we called her, died about 1990 at age 100); Lela, your grandmother, married James I. "Jim" Reeder; and Milton, who married Mary Lee "Mollie" Reeder, sister of "Uncle Jim," whom I remember so very well.

Remembering wartime story of Adair hero: James Nolan Cundiff

Adair Countian wrote home that Friday 13, 1945, was the luckiest day of his life. It was the day Allied Troops liberated him from Stalag IIB, Hammerstein, Pomerania (now Poland) when the area was controlled by Nazi Germany.

On Civic Pride: Deep shame and disappointment at voter turnout

A Guest Editorial
Comments re article 52062 Election Primary May 22 2012 Adair Co KY

By Jon Halsey
Guest Commentary

Kudos and heartfelt thanks for the timely and excellent election coverage.

I must, however, express my deep shame and disappointment at the turnout. When I think of the millions of people not only in this country but around the world who sacrificed so much through the ages to gain or to keep this most precious of our freedoms I am angered to the point of tears to find out that so many couldn't be bothered to make the almost minuscule effort to vote either at their precinct or by absentee ballot.

Ben Franklin showed his prescience when he responded to the lady who asked him what type of government the Constitutional Convention had given us with the terse statement: "A Republic madam, if you can keep it." It appears more and more that Franklin had cause for concern knowing the human frailties as well as he did. I fear that the evidence is mounting daily that we are losing the battle and today's sorry turnout only adds to that concern.

- John Halsey
Knifley, KY

Thanks and Amen, Mr. Halsey:Deepest gratitude for expressing an opinion we totally agree with - and stating it so well. My hope is that some organization, maybe a veterans organization or a civic club, maybe a non-partisan group, or the Adair County Ministerial Association will make voter turnout a cause. There is nothing we would be more proud of than that, in the general election of 2012, Adair County should have 100% of eligible voters registered, and that turnout would be 95-100% of the voters. Would be even happier if that happened nationwide -Ed Waggener
