Kentucky Derby: Wally Burress and Irving S. Cobb agree

Wally Burress writes:
Mr.Waggener, I had Laura send a couple of pictures from yesterday at the Derby. I tend to agree with what the author and columnist Irving S. Cobb wrote about the Kentucky Derby.

He wrote that "Until you go to Kentucky and with your own eyes behold the Derby, you ain't been nowheres and you ain't never seen nothing'!!

I know I'm biased on this subject, but it's quite the event to witness. I've been lucky to have attended 22 so far. Yesterday was the 28th anniversary of Chad's Derby. Regards, - Wally
Thanks, Wally Burress: And for those very, very few who don't remember who 'Chad' is, he's Coax Me Chad, Wally Burress's famous Derby Racehorse who's now a resident of Adair County. Story: It is Coax Me Chad's 30th birthday. - ED WAGGENER

Sharon Whitehurst suggests teensy blue flower is species of flax

Comments re photo 45075 Flowers Identity needed on teensy blue beautySharon Whitehurst writes:
My first guess is some species of the flax [linum] family. The photo resembles the one in my Audubon Society wildflower guide. An internet search yields similar photos and the information that there are around 200 species in this genus.

Wild flax isn't listed as a common Kentucky wildflower, but perhaps this is an escaped garden cultivar.

I trust that an Adair native will offer a firm identification. - Sharon Whitehurst
Thanks. Sharon Whitehurst: Geniece and I will go with 'some species of the flax family,' for now. -EW

Dave Rosenbaum: A Fairplay/Dug Hill story

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Mr. Fudge's article on the Dug Hill brought to mind an event relating to the Dug Hill that happened in my youth.

A group of Fairplay Community men were on a Saturday night toot. Sometime during the night their car left the road and plunged over the side of the Dug Hill. Luckily, a strategically placed small tree stopped the car and no one was hurt. The wreck was the principal subject of discussion at my father's country store for several days. During the discussions someone observed solemnly, " Well, the Lord was shore with them boys". Someone else quickly added from behind the coal stove, "Well, maybe so but He better ride with somebody else, them fellers gonna get Him hurt". --Dave Rosenbaum

The Whitehurst Diaries: We are Daughters of Eve

I'm told there are 'good snakes.' I scream and levitate upon encountering any snake - underfoot, overhead, dead or alive. - SHARON WHITEHURST
Comments re photo 45056 Working snake Going to dinnerBy Sharon Whitehurst

I find it intimidating enough to be watchful for snakes underfoot.

Until our daughter and son-in-law bought their place on Old Gradyville RD and began to point out snakeskins draped along the branches of their dooryard maples, I hadn't considered Kentucky as hosting tree-climbing serpents.

Poetry by Robert Stone: What comes along. A sonnet

What comes along
-a sonnet about living
This growing up is hazards to enmesh
again the learner just escaping free.
The thorn sprang back to pierce the tender flesh.
The road rose up to scar the speeding knee.

This socializing scene has ruts unclean
to snare the weak unsure soon marked with blame.
The word unkind incised deep marks unseen.
The taunt provoked shed tears and inward shame.

This settling down is sorting glad and sad
to fix their proper value and their scope.
The touch reminded both of good and bad.
The sound recalled both fear and fading hope.

Endeavor to set right what comes along,
already having judged so many wrong.

- Robert Stone, 6 May 2012

Thanks to Johnietta Jessie for sharing Munfordville, KY daytrip

Linda Waggener writes:
Thank you so much for the day trip to Munfordville! Now that the children have moved north and no longer live west of us, travels don't include that direction often and I love the area. We used to take the Blue Highways (great book!) through cave country on the way to Owensboro where our first grandchild was born. Your photos are always a joy to see and I look forward to many more. -- Linda Waggener

Kentucky Color - The Taming of Dug Hill

Dug Hill on KY 704 is only being tamed somewhat. But the change triggers memories of gentler times, when winding roads themselves were important elements of the journey. Thank God that even a tamer Dug Hill will still slow us down on our descent onto Crocus Creek and into the past and hopefully, into the future, he writes.
The next earlier Kentucky Color: Kentucky Color - Snowball Bush

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

For several decades now Dug Hill in all it's glory as a lofty sentinel has been serving as a prelude to the mysterious, often mist shrouded land of Crocus Creek. It has slowed us and caused us to look, listen, feel and live. Thankfully, Dug Hill is not being replaced by the placid gentle slope of a new route but is only being tamed somewhat with more width to accommodate 21st century traffic.
