Scenic Adair Co., KY: Up Neat Hollow Road

2012-04-25 - Neat Hollow Road, District 1, 2012 - Photo by Ed Waggener.
A Epiphany Insight: I've always been a Down Neat Hollow Road man, staunchly believing there's no prettier sights in the world than the valley opening up in the descent from the High Country at Ella dropping down to Little Cake Road. But today, looking back from a strategic stop, I was almost persuaded I've been wrong - that the scenery is even more compelling going up. Neat Hollow Road is the home of some fine gardens, beautiful homesteads, and even finer people.

Westlake Regional Hospital sale by June 30, 2012?

Report from regular meeting, Tuesday, April 24, 2012, of the Adair County Hospital Board of Trustees meeting:
Report updated at 11:11amCT, Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Judge Melton interviewed after a 45 minute conversation with KACO officials and attorneys. An emergency meeting of Fiscal Court is being set. Judge Melton says that Spectrum Health Partners and the Adair County Hospital Board of Trustees must understand that they are selling a public asset, not a private corporation, and Kentucky Open Meetings laws must be strictly adhered to.

By Ed Waggener

The financials are looking better, patient counts are up, the Westlake Regional Hospital is current on all its bank payments and made a profit of $91,877 in March, 2012, the consortium of banks holding loans is not pressing for a sale, there is bipartisan opposition in Columbia over the continuing Adair County Board of Trustees contract with Spectrum Health Partners and the board and Spectrum's continued effort to transfer assets of the hospital to a "strategic partner," but the wheels appear to be in motion for a sale completion by June 30, 2012.

Details are being being kept secret from the media and the public at this time.

Mike Watson: Time & Memory are Fickle...

Mike Watson adds another time reckoning event to the 'Sudden Death of R.A.C. Martin.' - 'the day of the Zollicoffer fight (Battle of Mill Springs, 19 January 1862)

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

The reckoning of time and placement of events in proper order is often a daunting task. As an historian, a dumpster-diver for history, one might say, I have found the memory to be quite fragile. We often remember an event in vivid detail, but the sequence leaves us lacking.

Amen to: The Consequence of Our Actions

Comments re article 51500: The Consequence of Our Actions by Barbara Armitage Jennifer Parker writes:
Amen to this article. I've written in the past regarding people passing in no-pass zones and this is another example of how people drive with no regard to the laws that are in place to protect our lives. My husband and I both have witnessed - on two separate incidents in the past week and a half - semi trucks running the same stop sign getting off the southbound exit of the parkway onto 61 South by Walmart. The one I saw was a UPS semi! It's just so unbelievable the disregard these drivers have for the lives and safety of others. - Jennifer Parker

PS: (I was especially shocked to know that a UPS driver had run the stop sign, as I have much respect for their services. - JP)
A CM Note: Thanks, Jennifer Parker. And before anyone thinks your letter is aimed at one class of drivers, we'd like to add that for the most part, commercial drivers - especially UPS drivers - behave far better than others. The problem, we think, is with just few bad drivers; we think, too, that the situation is at its worst with those who drive in a hostile manner - the few road bullies in cars, trucks, and on motorcycles who make us feel unsafe and threatened. - EW
