Eulogy for L. G. (Peanut) McKinley 2012-03-23

A moving remembrance of a great Adair Countian,
as written and delivered by George Rice

L.G. (Peanut) McKinley, Adair Co., KY (1928-2012)

As I stand here before you I feel very humble and honored that you have asked me to share in this service.

It does not need to be said--but still it should be said--that Peanut McKinley was a friend and neighbor to everyone that ever knew him. He was the kind of a person that was easy to love because he was a loving person. He was a people person, someone who made friends and was a friend. Somehow he would make you feel that you were someone special.

One of our local businesses told me that when he was able to get around that he would come by their office frequently just to bring good cheer and laughter. He had a laughter that came from his heart; I can almost hear him laugh now.

NBM - Never a Bad Meal at Campbellsville UMC potlucks

Risking intra-sectarian civil strife, first responder to call for Never a Bad Meal says it like she sees: Campbellsville UMC potlucks are the best

Martha Berry writes:
Ed, I know that you probably don't go to too many Methodist Potlucks, but you are missing a real treat. The best, by far, is at Campbellsville United Methodist on E. Main St. in C-ville. I don't like to be disloyal to Columbia UMC and other Churches that I have been associated with but I can't deny the wonderful food at C-ville UMC potlucks, be it for home folks or visiting dignitaries. All the cooks there put the little pot in the big pot and do their dead level best to have a wonderful meal. And royally succeed. - Martha Berry

(NBM) Opinions sought: I never got a bad meal at . . .

Found a great place to eat - Send a critique for The Epicurean Kentuckian (not a person; the EK is a State of Mind). 100 words or more. Photo(s) appreciated.

By Ed Waggener

There may be no better accolade for a restaurant than "I never got a bad meal there."

Consistent quality of food - knowing what to expect and getting it - may be the most important element behind a restaurant's success.

It's something we say about a Columbia destination restaurant, Betty's OK Country Kitchen, and many other places here and elsewhere. We'll only mention Betty's because it's such an institution. And, perhaps Shapiro's in Indianapolis, and the whole State of Arkansas for Fried Catfish, served with slaw, french fries and tomato pickles and sweet Vidalia Onions. (There ought to be a law, similar to the Grits Ordinance, that any restaurant serving catfish be required to serve pickled tomatoes with it.

Kentucky Color - Complexity and Beauty

Writer stands up for one of nature's most beautiful, useful plants
Click on headline for essay with photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

How can a flower of this complexity and beauty be so severely hated, feared and embattled?

Dandelion is one of the most prolific flowering plants in our area. It has bloomed every month during this most mild of winters. It has welcomed Spring with a more than tantalizing yellow hew over hill and dale.

In addition to its immense beauty the young tender leaves are great in a salad, the more mature leaves can be boiled to make greens and many folks like the blooms breaded and fried.

I for one vote that we end our rabid efforts to eradicate Dandelion from our manicured monocultured lawns and embrace it as the Prince embraced Cinderella and delivered her from the throes of her wicked step-sisters. - Billy Joe Fudge
