I think it goes without saying that most great artists are more than very talented, more than practiced in working in a particular medium, more than a gene pool of creativeness, more than patience personified, and more than a sum of their parts; great artists are overflowing with a passion for communicating a message to others.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Never hinder dance -a sonnet

Never hinder dance
-a sonnet inspired by The House of Bernarda Alba and two lines from e.e.cummings
Another place is home, traditional house
where birds in cages sing a single song,
where pride in past the flames of passion douse,
where personal desire in love is wrong.

Another time is now, conflicting life
where speech outside invites with siren call,
where custom sets the roles of man and wife,
where individual success is small.

Another future better will not come
where thoughts beat down in anger shrill despair,
where opportunity untouched is numb,
where self escapes to find there's nothing there.

How sad to never learn from one true soul
to never hinder dance beyond control.

- Robert Stone, 19 February 2012
The House of Bernarda Alba is a play by the Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca. The two lines from e.e.cummings are: "I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing / than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance" -ROBERT STONE

When the inmates run the asylum

Time was in this land when one could flee from one's past, change identity and begin again. I think of my ancestor who married the woman of his desire, no matter the objection of family, stole a horse, and carried his new bride to the wilds of Kentucky.

Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 156, The Bruensbach School

It's Just Me Again No. 156: The Bruensbach School At 18, he landed his first teaching job in a rural school. He was never so happy, he recalls. The only worry, would the kids like him?
The next earlier Chuck Hinman column: Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 138. Coyote hunts in the olden days

By Chuck Hinman

It's May 1940 (68 years ago) and I had finished my first year at Peru State Teachers College in Peru, Nebraska. I was certified to teach a rural school. This is in the days when rural schools dotted the countryside and before the mass consolidation of school districts into mega schools with transportation systems. Our family was a product of the rural school system circa 1925-1940. We went to New Hope School, District 122, a half mile east of our home.

Carol Perkins: Can't buy me love, love

When Whitney Houston died, columnist's mind immediately fixed on the lyrics of a Beatles' song. All, rich and poor think money will buy everything, but there's a difference, she says: The difference in famous people and their money and us who have just enough is that they are never able to escape.. An interesting commentary on money.
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins. Loving Tribute to a very lively Maltese, Fluffy

By Carol Perkins

Sing along. You know the words to the Beatles' Song, "Can't buy me love." Most of my generation cruised around town singing along with Paul, John, George and Ringo. Until recently, I had not focused on the words because I am not a lyrics person; I go for the beat and the sound. For some reason, this song is in my head and has been for weeks.
