Poetry by Robert Stone: Questing upward slopes

Questing upward slopes
-a sonnet for the birthday of Lisa Comperry
Compelling wonders wind through youthful dreams
enticing tenderfoot to tougher trail
where golden seemingly deserving schemes
too often shine their hour but later fail.

Constraining choices narrow future hopes
ensnaring visions dimmed to prison dread
where cherished trials questing upward slopes
can daily start but never get ahead.

Coercive age no invitation needs
entwining former strength in useless limb
where memories of skill enabled deeds
begin with joy but end with sorrow grim.

The young go forth believing time is theirs
but old retreat expecting growing cares.

The Flatwoods is mobilized to find missing pet

At first, a landowner's natural worry was that a stray hog would tear down all the fencing on the cattle farm, and Miss Victoria naturally succumbed to to that fear; she arose from her sickbed to survey the land for the errant hog, even had help from neighbors "Colonel William Casey" and "Mr. Nathan Montgomery, Jr." but to no avail. Late last evening, the mood changed from concern for property to compassion for the tiny stray, when it was learned that the animal is a mere 40 lb. pot-bellied pet, surely more frightened than intent on fence-busting mayhem.
Click on headline for full account, thus far, and a few pictures

By Ed Waggener

When Miss Victoria sent out a plea for help yesterday for someone to round up the pot bellied pig reported to be at large on her little field across from Jimmy Woody's estate because she was too sick to handle the roundup herself, her concern, at the time, was that this was big pig which might tear up her well tended fences.

Today, those fears are allayed. it is now known that this was far from being another 800 pound wild boar, the like of which scared the wits out of a neighbor woman who was planting watermelons. That was an incident which incited the woman's spouse to outrage and husbandly acts of chivalry and more than a tiny bit of bluster.

No, this animal turns out to be just a little pet, and the concern is now for the welfare of the 40 pound pet pig, which belongs to Craig and Stephanie Feese, who dwell south in the suburbs, in The Flatwoods.

AG agrees with Governor on blocking hospital merger

Related link: Hospital Merger Rejected about Governor Steve Beshear's rejection of the proposed University of Louisville/Jewish & St. Mary's HealthCare

Statement of Attorney General Jack Conway

My staff and I conducted a thorough and comprehensive review of the proposed hospital merger. This presented an unprecedented combination of entities and a myriad of legal and public policy issues. Some of those issues were addressed by the parties, but many of them were not resolved. Of particular concern was the loss of control of a valuable state asset and the services it provides to the public.

It is my opinion that the Governor should not at this time approve the proposed new affiliation agreement and new lease. I support the University of Louisville and its mission, but it is a public agency with an obligation to inform and work with state government regarding the control of a public asset such as University Hospital.

I appreciate Gov. Beshear's careful analysis of this merger, and I believe he ultimately made the appropriate decision on behalf of the Commonwealth's interests.

I am committed to working with all parties to ensure that our hospitals continue to fulfill their missions as leading trauma centers, teaching hospitals and nationally renowned research facilities.

Jack Conway
Attorney General, Commonwealth of Kentucky

Activism can work, locally and nationally

Locally: Maybe the lesson in Columbia, KY is that nobody says "No," to Sue Rowe, but credit has to be given to her and to Farmlands Publication/Community Voice publisher Sharon Burton for persistence in getting the City of Columbia to do the best thing they've done in a long time: Rebuild the historically named Well Walk in front of their businesses. (Or maybe the lesson is that you can work with City Hall, either way it's encouraging.)

Nationally: There's good news that Verizon backed down when customers were outraged when the company tried to tack on a so-called "convenience fee" for those who wish to pay on a one-time basis with a credit card, as reported December 30 in a story at Verizon reverses on $2 fee for one-time payments at Bloomberg.com. -EW

Columbia: A Happening Place (1948 style)

JIM has produced one of his greatest pieces yet. It's perfect for the New Year, because it tells Columbians take of what lasting good comes from eras of unbounded optimism in Columbia. 1948 was such an Era. It was a time when a new City Council had take over made many of the most progressive moves ever, and gave the City of Columbia lasting reforms. With scant revenue, they didn't just talk about improvements - they made them happen. If nothing else is read in its entirety today, we strongly recommend reading this article start to finish. -CM

by JIM

By the end of 1947, World War II was nearly thirty months in the past, the specter of Korea had not yet appeared on the event horizon, and even with post-war problems -- inflation and shortages of building materials, to name a couple -- the country brimmed with optimism. Columbia, with several new businesses opened since the summer of 1945, was a thriving community, and life was good.
