Sidewalk reconstruction, Monday evening, Nov. 7, 2011

2011-11-07 - 300 Quadrant, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The Well Walk off the Public Square reconstruction site has been minimized during the day. The contractors have reduced the space on the Square to the width of one storefront. At right is a photo of the compacted fill, now fenced off with a barricade squareside, and safety netting over the far end, over the alley. At the Columbia City Council meeting, Publisher Sharon Burton of the Farmland Publications, publisher of the Adair County Community Voice, one of three businesses on the walk, that the momentary disruption is well worth it. Workers in Farmland Publications, Dr. Janelle Brown, and Best Buys Clothes can be accessed only through their Reed Street lower level entrances until the Sidewalk is completed

The Whitehurst Diaries: Squirrels pantry disturbed

Limbing a fallen dead maple, the Whitehurst find that a squirrel's cache of corn had started sprouting
Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

By Sharon Whitehurst

Late in the summer a towering dead maple tree crashed down on the line fence landing at the edge of our cornfield.

Jim and Devin have been limbing the tree and cutting the heavy trunk into chunks. Devin called me out to see two sections of limb which had been stuffed with corn kernels, probably by an industrious squirrel.

Taking a closer look I realized some of the kernels are sprouting.

I have always wondered if the squirrels remember in the cold of winter where they have created these well stocked larders.

If that is the case, there will be a creature wandering along the cornfield come January, perplexed by the loss of his cache. -SHARON WHITEHURST

Query: Copy of Jake Burton's Big Grasshopper, extant?

For this and other Queries, check CM Classifieds: REUNIONS

Jeff Rooks writes:
A story appeared in your newspaper in 1971 concerning a Varmintology report and I do know this was all in fun. Jake Burton was my grandfather and the family has lost the picture of this giant grasshopper that was found on my grandfathers farm (according to Dr. W.K. Neat and his accomplice, Hon. J. (for Justice) Peterdick "Pete" Walker -CM). If it's still in your archive, can you please send copy to my e-mail. Thanks much. -JEFF ROOKS.
Thanks, Mr. Rooks. We engaged the best History Mystery experts in the business, so far to no advantage, to find a copy of this masterpiece. If anyone should find a copy of the famous newspaper - maybe in an old Columbia Daily Statesman, an old Green River Sprite, or an old Adair County News, the whole world would be much obliged. We're going to put this request in the CM REUNIONS section, where full many a similar quest has been met spectacular results. -EW

Full day set aside Nov. 8, Adair Parent/Teacher conferences

By Robert Harmon

I just wanted to send a quick reminder out about our Parent Teacher Conferences tomorrow, Tuesday, November 8, 2011. from 12pm noon-6pmCT, at ACES, 870 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY.

Parents/guardians do not need to schedule an appointment to speak with a child's teacher.

This is the second year that Adair County Schools have set aside an entire day for Parent Teacher Conferences.

Last year it was a great success as we had more parents than ever before to stop by school for a visit.

Please give us a call at 270-384-9118 if you have any questions.

Thanks!

-ROBBIE HARMON, Principal
for the ACES Family / Adair County Elementary School

MAYOR HARRIS: Please bear with us on Sidewalk Project

The end result will be well worth it. Hopefully, the sidewalk project will be just one of many revitalization projects which will make our downtown very nice and a much more pedestrian friendly place to be -MAYOR HARRIS

Mark Harris writes:

There will be work going on today on the sidewalk project in the alley in front of Community Voice and Dr. Brown's.

Please bear with us as we get this much needed project completed. It will be hopefully one of many revitalization projects that will make our downtown a very nice and much more pedestrian friendly place to be.

Sorry for any inconvienences . There should be ample parking spaces available on that corner of the Public Square - MAYOR HARRIS

Mayor Harris called later to say that the contractor will be moving equipment to make more parking available this morning, and will clear the area on the Square just as soon as it is possible. -CM

The Contractor can help, IFASN editor says

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Editor, It's Just for a Smile News

The contractor who is rebuilding the steps just off of the Square should pull in His work area. After the construction start up, the room for 4 or 5 parking spaces should be made available for customers. The room for most of there equipment could be placed in the alley way on the other end of this project. Just keep what is needed at the time on the square.

This project, when finished, should be a help to these few businesses on this corner.

A little planning could have helped a lot, but hindsight is 20-20.

I asked a former mayor to look at bricking or laying stone on the steps leading to the square on Campbellsville Street. I was thinking how much the stone wall on Old Greensburg Street at HIgh Street improved the looks there - at a not too high of a cost - which former mayor Pat Bell had done.

Little improvements like this really help the looks of our city much like the American flags have done.

The building across from City Hall -I think it's a law office, not sure - has shown how an older building can be made to look nice and still be an older building. The green with black trim and the cedar shake covered awning makes for a good Downtown look. -RALPH R. WAGGENER (2011-11-06)

Where is it now? Harmony's banner for largest Democratic majority

Does anyone know where the banner is? And some notes: Harmony no long has any detectable Democratic majority. It has been folded into a new South Columbia-Harmony precinct which has 485 Republicans vs. 283 Democrats. In fact the latest Adair County Voter Registration Statistics, for Fall 2011 indicates that not a single one of the 16 Adair County precincts has a Democratic majority; such is the state since the passing of the greatest Adair County Democratic Party organizer of all times, Bobby W. Loy. -EW

By JIM

The following appeared in the March 14, 1922 Adair County News in a column titled "Do You Remember?"

[Do you remember] When Hon. A.G. Talbot presented Harmony district with a silk flag for giving the largest Democratic majority in the county? It was at the time when they held three-day elections, and there were only three voting precincts in the county. The majority in the Harmony district was over 500. That old flag is doubtless store away somewhere in the county. It had printed on it a large ship with immigrants disembarking in the "Land of the free and the home of the brave." It was at a day when the Know Nothing organization was in existence, and was made a party issue. Does anyone remember what became of that flag or where it is now?

The reference to the Know Nothing Party dates the event described herein to the middle of the 19th century. Although the party was organized in 1843, it was most active for few years in the mid-1850s. The Know Nothings were vehemently opposed to the immigration of Germans and Roman Catholics.

Brought to the light of day and vast public scrutiny by the industry and dedication of JIM. -CM
