Where is it now? Harmony's banner for largest Democratic majority Does anyone know where the banner is? And some notes: Harmony no long has any detectable Democratic majority. It has been folded into a new South Columbia-Harmony precinct which has 485 Republicans vs. 283 Democrats. In fact the latest Adair County Voter Registration Statistics, for Fall 2011 indicates that not a single one of the 16 Adair County precincts has a Democratic majority; such is the state since the passing of the greatest Adair County Democratic Party organizer of all times, Bobby W. Loy. -EW By JIM The following appeared in the March 14, 1922 Adair County News in a column titled "Do You Remember?" [Do you remember] When Hon. A.G. Talbot presented Harmony district with a silk flag for giving the largest Democratic majority in the county? It was at the time when they held three-day elections, and there were only three voting precincts in the county. The majority in the Harmony district was over 500. That old flag is doubtless store away somewhere in the county. It had printed on it a large ship with immigrants disembarking in the "Land of the free and the home of the brave." It was at a day when the Know Nothing organization was in existence, and was made a party issue. Does anyone remember what became of that flag or where it is now? The reference to the Know Nothing Party dates the event described herein to the middle of the 19th century. Although the party was organized in 1843, it was most active for few years in the mid-1850s. The Know Nothings were vehemently opposed to the immigration of Germans and Roman Catholics. Brought to the light of day and vast public scrutiny by the industry and dedication of JIM. -CM This story was posted on 2011-11-07 06:49:16
