LWC Volleyball MSC Tournament champs, Nationals bound

Blue Raider Volleyball adds Mid-South Conference Tournament title to its resume at the Frankfort Civic Center, 405 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY on Sunday, November 6, 2011. Next play for Coach Andy Cavins' champions will be in NAIA National Tournament opening rounds, which get underway November 19, 2011.

FRANKFORT, KY - The Lindsey Wilson College volleyball team captured its first Mid-South Conference Tournament title today with a 3-1 win over Georgetown (KY) College at the Frankfort Convention Center.



With the win, Lindsey Wilson (31-2) earns the MSC's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament which begins November 19 at various sites. The winner of the opening site matches advances to the final site at Sioux City, Iowa November 29-December 3, 2011.

The Blue Raiders completed its season sweep of the Tigers -- LWC won both regular season matches - with a 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 27-25 in the tournament finals.

Lindsey Wilson opened the match with a come-from-behind win to take a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Raiders overcame a 23-21 deficit in the first set to score four straight points to win 25-23. Freshman Taylor Hayne recorded the last two kills of the set to give the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead. Hayne finished with a team-high 17 kills.

In set two, Hayne and freshman Sierra Wilkerson led the Blue Raider attack en route to a 2-0 lead.

Hayne put away five kills while Wilkerson added four kills, including three straight during the middle part of the set. Wilkerson finished with eight kills and amassed a .400 attacking percentage.

The Blue Raiders used a 6-2 run in the final stages of the set to take the 2-0 advantage.

In set three, the Tigers (20-17) seized control from the very beginning scoring nine of the game's first 11 points. Georgetown extended its lead to 15-6 before the Blue Raiders scored four straight points to climb within five (15-10).

But the Tigers regained the momentum to eventually win the set 25-18.

In the decisive set, Lindsey Wilson led 18-12 before the Tigers tied the set at 20-20. The two teams exchanged points over the next 10 scores and were tied at 25-25.

The Blue Raiders scored the final two points of the set to win 27-25 to claim the title. Lindsey Wilson grabbed the 26-25 advantage off a Georgetown hitting error and then Hayne put an exclamation point on the match with her 17th kill of the day for the win.

Lindsey Wilson advances to the program's first national tournament with the win. The Blue Raiders will learn their opening round opponent on November 13.
