AYDC shop makes new benches for Homeplace

2011-09-06 - 5807 New Columbia RD, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by George Kolbenschlag.
Ricky Collins, vocational tech instructor at the Adair County Youth Development Center tries one of the ten benches residents of the Center built for Homeplace on Green River. Collins designed the benches and his students built them. Work on the benches was rushed so they could be completed for Saturday's Fall Heritage Festival at Homeplace. The benches will be used in the two tents set up to accommodate the 11 musicians and music groups that will be performing at the Festival. The music, entrance, parking, the agricultural demonstrations and many of the other activities will be free. There will be a nominal charge for food and some activities. -George Kolbenschlag, Columbia, Kentucky

Birds of Kentucky: Doesn't worry about hummers until October

Comment re: Breaking hummingbird's dinner plate when they're overstaying here

Jon Halsey writes:
Don't know if it's proper or not, but we leave ours up awhile.

We've noticed that the males tend to leave first, usually several days before the females. Seems like there is always a straggler or we may be getting a wayfaring stranger just taking a bit of respite on its way south.

The "so-called experts" seem to think that the 1st week of October is the safe date. We tend to wait until we have not seen any for two weeks.

Hope this helps.

Columbia not walker-friendly; for visually impaired it is downright dangerous

Writer has almost been hit on many occasions. And for many, there is no alternative to walking. Having to use taxis to get get around is expensive, too much so for fixed income. Walking in writer's Bomar Heights is particularly dangerous because of speeding drivers, lack of sidewalks. Cites impossible crossing at Tutt, Curry/Bomar Heights and Jamestown Street, near Sonic; and difficulties with crossing at Jamestown ST and Hurt/Tractor Supply Entrance.

By Reece Antone

I am a resident of Adair county, I have been here just over a year.I am visually impaired and have MS. I have found it very very hard to navigate Columbia without aid of other people. It is almost impossible to walk alone down the city streets, I have been almost hit on numerous occasions.

Democrat calls for justice in heinous hay on skid loader cage case crime

But is offended at being put under suspicion by one of Lairds of Rowe Farms, Inc.

Victoria Pike writes:
Being a Democrat myself, I am highly offended at being included in this group of fine upstanding folks from Adair County that are under suspicion. I think it odd that there is one fine upstanding group of friends excluded from suspicion in this case. That group being Republicans. I am sure this must be just an oversight or don't they have anyone who can lift that much? All joking aside, whoever did this must be brought to justice. Be glad to run out and remove it with my Massey tractor and loader. Vicky --Victoria Pike

I appreciate it when someone takes time out of their busy day to give 110%...to go that extra mile in order to make someone else's day a little easier. In fact, I appreciate it so much that I usually try to take the time to tell them, "Hey, you're doing a great job! Thank you for what you did!"

Birds of Kentucky: Hints get hummers to move out?

Cheryl Strodtman writes:
One lone Ruby Throat Hummingbird remains at the feeder after its large family took off a few days ago for warmer climes. Our family is divided as to how to encourage him to leave before colder weather arrives: one thinks it wise to take down the feeder so Mr. or Miss Hummingbird will "take the hint" and move on; one thinks it better to leave the feeder up until it decides to go on its own.
KBRLAre there any bird lovers out there who have suggestions? Thanks. - Cheryl Strodtman

Big Al: Talbott Tavern & Big Al & Don Roussin

Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker and Epicurean Kentuckian, visited and reviewed the famed Old Talbott Tavern, 102 W. Stephen Foster, Bardstown, KY. As usual, things happen when Big Al is present. If the Pope or Obama had been in town, he would have been at the next table over. As it was, he met famed brew authority and author Don Roussin, while, coincidentally enjoying a Bud. (No Falls City or Oertel's '92, but it will do on a sweltering day.) They shared happy stories, sympathy for parched throated Adair Countians, choking back the tears for the plight of beer drinkers in (almost) paradise, 20 miles from merciful respites in Campbellsville, KY
