Lifetime Of Work And Success Shared By Kinnairds The Story of Lovie Clark and R.T. Kinnaird is a beautiful story of a lifetime romance, of Amazing Grace, and of the Sulphur Well/Sulphur Well which existed in long ago segregated Kentucky. He became a highly respected Edmonton, KY, businessman; she attended Jackman High in Columbia, KY, and became a school teacher. There had been hurts they never forgot from childhood: "Ordinarily the children didn't mind the long walk to school, they had become accustomed to this. But there were times when the weather was bad their walk would be very unpleasant, especially when it was cold. The school bus for white students also traveled along the same route the Clarks took each day, but at that time blacks were not allowed to ride, so the driver never stopped for them regardless of the weather. "There is no way to keep that from hurting." Lovie commented, "But I never look back. There is no use - that's just the way times were then." She spoke without resentment, simply stating things as they were in her youth." This story is reprinted today to celebrate Sulphur Well, the location, today, of one of America's longest running traditions the Third Sunday in August. The following is the introduction from that article: The place Sulphur Well, Kentucky holds unique memories for people across Kentucky and surrounding states because of the fame for its artesian sulphur "healthy" water well and for its country ham and hospitality at the Buelah Villa Hotel. Don Graeter recently caught himself wondering about it and used the Google search engine for information about the name King Crenshaw. Google matched him up with ColumbiaMagazine.com and our following communications resulted in his sharing of . . . "MEMORIES OF BUELAH VILLA" By Don Graeter August 1955. There in black and white was my grandmother, just as Iremember her, and a smart aleck seven year old making a face. No denyingit, that was me. Fifty years ago. FIFTY YEARS? No denying that either. Mom took thepicture. She would have been thirty five. Now, as I helped her get somethings in order, this treasure had risen to the surface of the "picturedrawer." There were "Gran" and me at the Buelah Villa Hotel in Sulphur Well,standing on the short footbridge from the main hotel to the annex. At thetime, Mom had been furious with me for ruining the picture. Commenting on the importance of country stores to community life, he said that one thing those who care about it need to know: They don't have to start out as a Cracker Barrel competitor. All they have to do, he said, is be open regularly, slice sandwiches, have drinks and ice cold milk, and packaged snacks. Then there's a place to gather and exchange news. A place to get a quick lunch. If profits permit, then grow. JIM: A visitor to Columbia became 1-Person Board of Trade Some communities always have a lasting impact on a visitor. Columbia has seemed to have a singular ability to do so over its two centuries plus history. Whether it is a first time visitor passing the Trabue House on Jamestown Street and saying, as it so often happens, 'That is the most beautiful public building I've ever seen,' on first sighting the Historic Adair County Courthouse, or it's the person who looks out across the Fountain Plaza, zones out, and comments minutes later, 'I could sit here and enjoy this forever,' the town has a way of making one person Boards of Trade & Tourism of total strangers, as happened in this 1921 history jewel discovered by Jim. -CM A 'drive from Columbia to Campbellsville is worth a week's visit to Chicago,' -Wm. BLACKALL, Chicago, Illinois (1921) By Jim A traveler reflects: an outsider's view of Adair County, 1921 In the 1920 U.S. census, Mr. William Blackall, age 45 years, resided in a boarding house on Clark Street in Chicago. His profession was listed as "expert" and his occupation was given as "safe installation." The following year, Mr. Blackall had occasion to visit Columbia in connection with work required on the vault safe of the Bank of Columbia.
