Country Store 101: Essential things first

Back to basics

James Garrison of Garrison Construction Co. gave me this bit of wisdom this week. Commenting on the importance of country stores to community life, he said that one thing those who care about it need to know: They don't have to start out as a Cracker Barrel competitor. All they have to do, he said, is be open regularly, slice sandwiches, have drinks and ice cold milk, and packaged snacks. Then there's a place to gather and exchange news. A place to get a quick lunch. If profits permit, then grow. But don't let the community die because it doesn't have a country store. -CMPS: He's seen it work, in Casey Co., KY
