2011-07-26 - Photo by Heather Evans.
Rarely seen bird around here "Just wanted to share with birders everywhere. Noticed this bird nesting in my ficus tree, outside for the summer. From the picture and characteristics of the nest, came to the conclusion she is a Blue Grosbeak. Not something I see every day!," writes Heather Evans.

Update on Beagle found at Lindsey Wilson

Jayne Hopkins writes:
I work at LWC and I have taken the beagle to my home to cool off and eat. If you are missing your beagle or if no one claims him and you would like to adopt him (he's a puppy still, but doesn't have much growing to do. He's very friendly - to humans and dogs - and smart), please contact me as soon as possible. He will probably be brought to Peg at Sugarfoot Farm if he is not claimed or adopted in the next couple of days. Thank you! - Jayne Hopkins, hopkinsj@lindsey.edu

Bottle caps recycling idea was too good to be true, writer finds

Barbara J Armitage writes:
I know that when something seems too good to be true it usually is. I just got a call from a friend on this so I checked www.snopes.com for more information. This is a hoax.

Bottle caps are made from a variety of plastics not all of which are easily recycled and so are not accepted at recycle centers.

It would have been nice...

Mike Watson: How long since flag flew atop Adair Co. Courthouse?

From Mike Watson

How long since we have seen a flag here?
"A large flag has been ordered from Louisville and when it arrives it will be erected on the courthouse cupola, and will wave above the basket." -Adair County News, 25 April 1917--Shortly after the declaration of war by the US Congress, World War I.
--Mike Watson

Thanks. That must have been a beautiful sight. In fact, I wonder why Mayor Harris (270) 384-2501 and/or Judge Melton (270) 384-4703 haven't yet seen to it that a flag was flown from the top of the historic courthouse this day. It is definitely an idea whose time has come again. -EW

Three Adair County post offices on USPS hit list

If closures happen, Adair County will have only one post office, Columbia 42728. Does anybody remember how many post offices were here when every neighborhood seemed to have one? (Emergency update from Mike Watson at 12:57pmCT: Well, Ed, by my count - not including name or spelling changes, or changes from county to county due to close proximity of county lines - 80 postoffices in Adair County at one time or another. - Mike Watson) Anyone know what will have to be done to prevent the closures? - CM

This just in from "Jim".

Three Adair County Post Offices are on the USPS "hit list" for possible closure:
  • Breeding, 42715
  • Cane Valley, 42720
  • Gradyville, 42742
We're checking the rest of the list for closures the other six area counties, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties. Our thanks to "Jim" for this news tip. Update: Here it is: Also targeted are Windsor 42565 in Casey County; Knob Lick 42154 in Metcalfe County, and Mannsville 42758 in Taylor County. We did not find any others in the Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell, and Taylor County area in a pretty careful scan.

JIM: The put-upon politician

M. Rey Yarberry's candidate won in 1906, even after a double washout in Columbia, gleefully reported by the Democratic Adair County News. His opponent sour-graped that the victory came from the free use of money and whiskey, which draws sharp rebuke, by "Jim," 105 years later! -CM

By "Jim"

In the course of doing a bit of research (a fine euphemism for "dodging work like the lazy dog I am" if ever there were one!), this snippet of political news came to light.

The July 25, 1906 News reported that "Col. Clark's circus drew a large crowd to Columbia last Thursday and the show was well patronized." It was quite too well patronized to suit one politician, no doubt.

D.C. Edwards was a Republican candidate for Congress from the 11th District that year, the primary election to be held on August 18th, and he sailed into Columbia to orate from the soapbox on Thursday, July 19th -- the day the circus came to town. (There's an old joke about the difference in a politician and a circus clown, but this being a family magazine, it isn't fitten to be printed here.) Anyway, the News, being a staunchly Democratic paper, with straight-faced glee informed readers that "Clark's circus drew the crowd and there was no speaking."

Mr. Edwards then made arrangements to speak that night, but unbeknownst to him, the Columbia Brass Band was giving an outdoor performance that evening--"and there was no speaking."

It certainly be interesting to know what sort of mutterings Mr. Edwards had about the double washout, but some things are best left unsaid. At any rate, with strong backing from Adair County's own M. Rey Yarberry, he won the primary by several thousand votes and was given the certificate of nomination, even though his primary opponent John White sour-graped that Mr. Edwards' win came from the free use of money and whiskey. (In Kentucky politics? Never!) - "Jim

Woman makes off with huge haul from Farmers Market

Sainted mother Gertrude Browning left with cooking chores while playgirl daughter, a known Democratic political operative and accomplice of Cynthia Rowe and Ben Loy, goes off to play with cows and their children in Adair County golf and gentry community, Bliss, KY.

Victoria Pike confesses:
Just got home from the Farmers Market. The little black space machine was loaded down with fresh bread, cantalope, tomatoes, potatoes, and fresh corn. I highly suggest people take advantage of nature's bounty this time of year. The tables were filled to capacity this morning. Now, if Mother has time to cook any of it. I am off to fight weeds and see about the girls, my highly spoiled and slightly plump cows and their new babies.Have a great day Ed. See you at the farmers market. Vicky - Victoria Pike

Spectrum releases its assessment of Westlake Regional Hospital

The long-awaited report gives a General Summary of the Conditions Assessment and Strategy for the future. A sale of the hospital is precluded for now, heavy debt-to-asset ratio on March 29, 2011 - and County Judge Executive Ann Melton says, that regardless of what may being speculated, a sale of Westlake won't happen on her watch if she can help it. The report also includes a Strategy for the future -turn around plans - which gives hope for what could be, and should be, Adair County's flagship business: Healthcare. It also includes a review of salaries paid to healthcare providers at present. -CM

Part 1, CM Report on Report: General Summary

Today, TUESDAY with CM. July 26, 2011

Here are Quick Links to selected favorite columns, stories with perhaps some links to albums, and to news from the past week and beyond. SUNDAY with CM - JULY 24, 2011 for July 24, 2011 and your favorite writers + important news stories:
A Time to Praise Great Adair Countians.
More will be added today, we hope, with the help of readers. Along with it, we hope suggestions for what would be proper and fitting honors for the living, memorials for the dead, should be be considered by the community:
  • Charles Victor Sparks: The community continues to grieve. No one speaks of his him with another who knew him without a choke, without misty eyes, and always, an story about how he personally touched so many lives, in both big and little ways. Thoughts are now turning to fitting memorials and tributes.

  • Dakota Meyer:: What tributes Adair and Green Counties have to tell the country how proud we are of Congressional Medal of Honor Dakota Meyer, whose name is already a household word in America? An who was claimed for a short time, by Austin, Texas (but the Austin American has updtated their story in the last day: See http://www.statesman.com/news/local/future-medal-of-honor-recipient-now-lives-in-1633907.html)? A street? A school? A locally made movie?

  • BG James A. Williamson:And as we do, would it be a good time for Adair County to make a permanent monument to her first Congressional of Honor winner, BG James A Williamson: Son of Adair, Medal of Honor receipient? After all, it is significant that there are two Congressional Medal of Honor winners from one small town.

  • Col. Frank Wolford: Does yet more need to be done to pay tribute to him? An article article in Sunday with CM, by Jim about another facet of Frank Lane Wolford's career - as a statesman - brings to memory another quote by Adair County's Judge H.C. Baker from an earlier contribution by Cyrus:
Judge H.C. Baker wrote this about Colonel Frank Wolford, after Wolford's death in 1895:
He did not aspire to be any other body than Frank Wolford, and hence he had no model after which to pattern. Frank Wolford was sui generis, a diamond in the rough, and just a little different from all other diamonds.
