Tigers sign Dodgers draft pick, former Oregon Player of Year Offensively, he's a pure hitter, CU coach Chris Lewis says of new signee Click on headline for full story with list of new Tiger signees plus photo By Chris Megginson / Campbellsville Sports Information CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Kevin Taylor, the 2009 Oregon 6A Player of the Year, has decided to pass on an opportunity to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers and is bound for Campbellsville University this fall. The 6-foot, left-handed hitting infielder, will join two of his former summer league coaches Brad Neffendorf and Chris Lewis in a Tiger uniform. "We are really excited to sign Kevin," Lewis said. "First and foremost, he is a great kid that comes from a great family. He is a very humble kid, which you don't find very often anymore with great players. He is a great teammate, never complains and his passion for the game is contagious." Prior to college, Lewis got to see these qualities first-hand in Taylor as his coach two different summers. In 2008, Taylor helped lead the Northwest Star Academy, coached by Neffendorf and Lewis, to the 2008 Babe Ruth World Series. He hit .444 with 16 doubles and one home run en route to being named MVP. In 2009, he joined another summer league team coached by Lewis and hit .577 with 23 doubles, nine home runs and 72 RBIs before entering college. "Offensively, Kevin is a pure hitter who can hit with power to all fields and defensively, he could play all nine positions. He can run the bases as well," Lewis said. "We wanted to add another left-handed stick to the lineup to go along with (Craig) Edwards and (Aaron) Schwoebel, and we know that we have done that and more." Taylor comes to the Tigers after two seasons at Western Nevada Community College, where he hit six home runs, 21 doubles and had 57 RBIs through 66 games played. He hit .328 and .337 in his two years for the Wildcats. Following his freshman season in 2010, he was the one of two freshmen to be named a Scenic West Athletic Conference All-Region 18 First Team selection. The other was Bryce Harper, who was selected No. 1 in the 2010 MLB Draft. The Dodgers took note in the summer of 2011 and drafted Taylor in the 36th round of the MLB Draft as a second baseman. He also played third and shortstop for the Wildcats. Prior to Western Nevada, Taylor was a four-year starter for Sunset high School in Portland, Ore. During those four years, Taylor hit 23 home runs and 24 doubles, including 11 homers his senior season. He hit over .330 each season, including .489 as a sophomore and .478 his senior year. He climbed the All-League ladder, being an honorable mention as a freshman, second team selection his junior season and a first team award winner as a sophomore and senior. In 2009, he was named the Metro League Player of the Year, MVP of the state all-star series, was a First Team All-State selection and was voted the Class 6A Player of the Year for the state of Oregon. Following high school, Taylor participated in the 2009 AAA Home Run Derby at Portland's PGE Park, winning the one round of high school competition with eight home runs. His eight bombs were the most in a single round and his final home run traveled 432 feet and was the second-longest in the competition. 2011-12 Campbellsville Recruiting Class Marc Garza | 1B | Othello, Wash. | Walla Walla Community CollegeThe writer of this article, Chris Megginson, is Sports Information Director for Campbellsville University This story was posted on 2011-07-26 10:16:05
