Security for President much greater now than even 16 years ago

Comments re article 45798. Mayor Harris Dream President presents Dakota Meyer medal in Columbia KY

Robert H. Stone writes:
I was with a friend in Warm Springs, Georgia, when Clinton and many other big names came to town for the Four Freedom Awards on the Fiftieth Anniversary of Roosevelt's death, 1995. Looking back, it is amazing how little security there was compared with what would happen today. I was probably less than 500 feet from the president and I don't recall being asked any questions by anybody. Robert H. Stone, Lebanon, TN
Thanks. Your note reminds me of my father telling me of being in Hodgenville, KY, when the President of the United States rode past crowds in an open convertible. "I could have reached over and touch Roosevelt," he said, with the same reverence he would have had for a deity, prounouncing FDR's last name, in the custom of the day "Roo-suh-velt." Now, securityis so tight that Kathy Lee Gifford rides in a gun proof popemobile on a visit to South Park, CO - at least she did in the cartoon episode Evan let me watch this morning on an iPad. -EW

Mayor Harris' Dream: President presents Dakota Meyer medal in Columbia, KY

But it was just a dream, he said.

Dakota Meyer's Congressional Medal of Honor is on every mind in Columbia, and no where more so than Mayor Mark D. Harris's.

"I had Dream," Mayor Harris said. "I dreamed President Obama called to say that he would be presenting the Medal in Columbia. I woke up in a panic thinking about what all the security we would have put have to put into place and all the protocol for the ceremony we'd have to have when the President would be here."

JIM: The new Providence Baptist Church building, 1906

Story on July 2011 homecoming at Providence Baptist Church triggers a search by Jim which uncovered this story about what may have been the largest crowd ever assembled at Stapp Springs

By "Jim"

While catching up with my reading on CM a while ago, the announcement of the annual homecoming at Providence Baptist Church (Sunday, July 24) caught my eye. One of the largest crowds (perhaps the largest) ever assembled at Stapp Springs occurred 105 years ago this past spring when the new Providence Church building was dedicated on the eighth day of April, 1906.

Carol Perkins: Aunts

'Aunts are precious accessories who can give the extra love kids need.'
Next previous Carol Perkins column: At long last, Carol Perkins: Dr. Oz

By Carol Perkins

Aunts

The most necessary person in a child's life, other than a mother or grandmother, is an aunt, and I am the best aunt any niece or nephew could have. I have two nieces and three nephews who are my brothers' children. The youngest one will be a senior at Cumberland County High School next year. The others are either in college or out and working.

One-three-one hundred to boost the Adair County economy

A suggestion to start this Monday morning, posted after being inspired to do so by the editorial comment "Victoria Pike voices pro-Adair County product policy"Special ColumbiaMagazine.com

A Columbia man saw this idea on a recent visit to San Diego. It's a grassroots movement idea which could - ground up - save local businesses, build the local economy, and strengthened the values Adair Countians hold dear. It works like this

Today, MONDAY with CM, JULY 25, 2011

Here are Quick Links to selected favorite columns, stories with perhaps some links to albums, and to news from the past week and beyond. SUNDAY with CM - JULY 24, 2011 for July 24, 2011 and your favorite writers + important news stories:
A Time to Praise Great Adair Countians.
More will be added today, we hope, with the help of readers. Along with it, we hope suggestions for what would be proper and fitting honors for the living, memorials for the dead, should be be considered by the community:
  • Charles Victor Sparks: The community continues to grieve. No one speaks of his him with another who knew him without a choke, without misty eyes, and always, an story about how he personally touched so many lives, in both big and little ways. Thoughts are now turning to fitting memorials and tributes.

  • Dakota Meyer:: What tributes Adair and Green Counties have to tell the country how proud we are of Congressional Medal of Honor Dakota Meyer, whose name is already a household word in America? An who was claimed for a short time, by Austin, Texas (but the Austin American has updtated their story in the last day: See http://www.statesman.com/news/local/future-medal-of-honor-recipient-now-lives-in-1633907.html)? A street? A school? A locally made movie?

  • BG James A. Williamson:And as we do, would it be a good time for Adair County to make a permanent monument to her first Congressional of Honor winner, BG James A Williamson: Son of Adair, Medal of Honor receipient? After all, it is significant that there are two Congressional Medal of Honor winners from one small town.

  • Col. Frank Wolford: Does yet more need to be done to pay tribute to him? An article article in Sunday with CM, by Jim about another facet of Frank Lane Wolford's career - as a statesman - brings to memory another quote by Adair County's Judge H.C. Baker from an earlier contribution by Cyrus:
Judge H.C. Baker wrote this about Colonel Frank Wolford, after Wolford's death in 1895:
He did not aspire to be any other body than Frank Wolford, and hence he had no model after which to pattern. Frank Wolford was sui generis, a diamond in the rough, and just a little different from all other diamonds.

Victoria Pike voices pro-Adair County product policy

Stanley and Shirley Jones honey on homemade bread by Miss Caitlyn Bunnell is DELICIOUS she says. But she'll be saving her own jar for the production of her famous winter cough syrup, Vickyquil

By Victoria Pike

COBURG, KY (2011-07-24) -Honey made at Kellyville by Stanley and Shirley Jones is delicious.

Adair county folks were beating a trail to their door this afternoon. While I was there H.D. (Dwayne) Loy being driven by his lovely wife Susan showed up to purchase some as well.

A great time was had by all during our short visit. Everyone was anxious to get home and have a taste. I sampled mine on a piece of homemade bread made by Miss Catlyn Bunnell from the farmers market. DELICIOUS.

According to my husband's nurse practitioner, local honey helps prevent sinus infections.

My jar will probably be used to make my famous cough remedy this winter. Vickyquil. Never hurts to be prepared. The other ingredients are a closely guarded secret. --Victoria Pike
