Mike Watson: Vanished Silent City in Rice Addition

Author of Adair County Histories says it was remembered as "Caldwell Cemetery" and was on land once owned by first clerk. It may have been obliterated by Civil War encampments and might never have been restored after that. Last known burial was of Captain John S. Squires, who died in Mexico City on 20 March 1848. The following may be of help to Brother Jim and others interested in the lost Columbia "Silent City"

I believe Chris Cato is the closest to the location. On the bluff overlooking Russell Creek, now the Rice Addition, on land once owned by William Caldwell, was the location of an early cemetery. I have never been able to find any reference to a name for it, but common belief among historians Nancy Berley, Ruth Burdette and Randy Flowers was that it was known as Caldwell Cemetery and several of William's kinsmen were buried there. The cemetery was still used as late as 1848 as can be evidenced by the burial there of Captain John S. "Jack" Squires, a Mexican War casualty.

She was a member of a large, respected Metcalfe Co., KY family and a member of Lone Star Baptist Church

Amanda Nell Hines age 92 of Edmonton died Friday July 15, 2011 at the Metcalfe County Health Care in Edmonton, KY.

Funeral services will be 1pmCT, Monday, July 18, 2011, at the Lone Star Baptist Church, 3867 Lone Star RD, Edmonton, KY, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2pm-8pmCT, at the Butler Funeral Home. 201 East ST, Edmonton, KY.

Columbia Rotary Club gives $7,000 To Lindsey Wilson scholarship fund

Members of the Columbia Rotary Club recently gave $7,000 to Lindsey Wilson College. The money, which the Rotarians raised during 2010-11, will be used to provide scholarships to Adair County residents who attend the college. More than 350 Adair County residents attended LWC in 2010-11.

The college's 2011 fall term begins on August 17, 2011.

Those presenting a facsimile check to the LWC Vice President for Educational Outreach and Student Financial Services Denise Fudge, were Rotarian Hunter Durham; Rotary President Jerry Hall; Rotarian Dawson Cunningham; Rotarian Kaye Bowman; Rotarian Phil Hanna; Rotarian George Koblenschlag; and Rotarian Ted Caldwell.

Lebanon, KY photo before 1960s, observer thinks

This picture is before the 1960s. The American flag tells us that it is prior to January 1959, because in all likelihood they would not be using one with only 48 stars in the field of blue. Since Alaska became our 49th state on January 3, 1959 and Hawaii became our 50th state on August 21, 1959, it holds that this pic was taken in 1958 or perhaps before. The rows of stars are 6 X 8. Just an observation to consider.

But some are still puzzled about exactly where the location of the Vanished Silent City is. We hope others will continue communicating with Jim and sharing information on CM until this History Mystery is solved, which, for us, will be when Justin Bailey, Addressing and Mapping Coordinator, assigns a Street Number and after an FFA Address Marker is installed and Alan Reed and Perry Parrish fly over and give us an aerial photograph of the precise location, along with a fitting sonnet, an apt limerick, a two page centerfold feature in Bill Matthews' Back Home in Kentucky, a Dave Shuffett piece on the KET is aired, a segment on History Detectives is produced. Wayside Markers, Historical Markers, and parking spaces for Canadian Tour Buses, and the Lindsey Wilson Drama Department Outdoor Pageant, could, of course follow in due course. -EW

Walking: How many times around Square equals a mile

I like to walk and I was wondering if you could tell me how many times you have to walk around the Square and Roadside Park to equal a mile. Thanks - Angie Meadows
Thanks! Excellent and timely question. We'll need help for the precise mileage, but from stepping off the Square, it is about 2 tenths of a mile. Five times would be one mile.That's on the sidewalk. If you're biking, on the circle around the courthouse, it is roughly one-tenth of a mile. Chairman Charles Grimsley of the Columbia/Adair Parks and Recreation is looking into ways to get more people to use the Downtown Walking Campus for recreation and exercise. The Roadside Park is operated by the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce, 201 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY, Phone (270) 384-6020. Richard and Mary Beth Phelps keep a protective eye on it and have been the driving force behind making it a jewel in the Adair County system of parks and venues. Distance markers there would seem an excellent idea. And, by the way, the new City Administration is taking great interest in making the Square more visitor and pedestrian friendly. -Ed Waggener

The Farm Service Agency reminds farmers the final date to complete a crop acreage report for the 2011 crop year is July 15, 2011. Farmers who participate in U.S. Department of Agriculture programs through the Farm Service Agency should file a crop acreage report annually to retain program eligibility.
