Walking: How many times around Square equals a mile

Angie Meadows writes:
I like to walk and I was wondering if you could tell me how many times you have to walk around the Square and Roadside Park to equal a mile. Thanks - Angie Meadows
Thanks! Excellent and timely question. We'll need help for the precise mileage, but from stepping off the Square, it is about 2 tenths of a mile. Five times would be one mile. That's on the sidewalk. If you're biking, on the circle around the courthouse, it is roughly one-tenth of a mile. Chairman Charles Grimsley of the Columbia/Adair Parks and Recreation is looking into ways to get more people to use the Downtown Walking Campus for recreation and exercise. The Roadside Park is operated by the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce, 201 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY, Phone (270) 384-6020. Richard and Mary Beth Phelps keep a protective eye on it and have been the driving force behind making it a jewel in the Adair County system of parks and venues. Distance markers there would seem an excellent idea. And, by the way, the new City Administration is taking great interest in making the Square more visitor and pedestrian friendly. -Ed Waggener
