Wants City Flag, County flag - if there is 1 - to fly over Rec Center

Comments re article 45159 CommunityRecreation Center cleanup is todayMelewi writes:
Do we have an Adair County flag that we could fly at the new Community Recreation Center?

If not, we may need to have a contest to design one.

Do we have a City flag?

Inquiring minds want to know.

The Community Recreation Center is something the City and the county can be proud to have. It is a beautiful piece of property and a great gathering place for the whole community. - M.E. LEWIS
The City of Columbia does have a grand and glorious banner, with awe inspiring crossed thunderbolts and the enigmatic, Fenwickian slogan, "Looking Back to Forge Ahead." Adair County does not have an official county flag, so far as is known here at CM HQ. - EW

M: Thinks most English errors are habit, not ignorance

Remembers helping rule of favorite English teacher, Doris Depp

Anonymous former school teacher "M" writes:
There are many intelligent folks around here, even radio announcers, who say "I seen" and "I done." My favorite English teacher, Doris Depp, would emphasize that the words seen and done require helping verbs. "I have seen" and "I have done" are correct. I think most of our English errors are made by habit, not by ignorance. -"M"

Grammar Usage: Totally agrees with California writer

Sue M. Smith writes:
Can you stand one more comment on the incorrect grammar usage?

I have to say, I was appalled when I read in the newspapers that the victim was "ran over". I am from Kentucky and was educated in Kentucky.

I had a teacher in the 8th grade who "preached" constantly about incorrect grammar--she told us things like "ran over" were considered "non-standard English" and she better not hear or see anyone speaking it or writing it; she said when you do that, you are "butchering" the English language. In fact, when we had writing assignments she warned that any non-standard English usage would be an automatic "F" grade. She kept her word--there were always several in the class who received an "F" grade. - Sue M Smith
Of course you and the California writer are right about the consequence on speaking non-standard English - at least economically speaking. Some of us who have the education of a billy goat - even with degree(s) - know that standard English is essential for business. On the other hand, literature would be so bland if all of Elmore Leonard's and John Kennedy Toole's characters spoke only standard English, wouldn't it? - EW

SATURDAY with CM. June 25, 2011

It's a day full of activities in Adair County today!

The Events section is filled with special activities today. It starts with the Crappie USA Tournament at Holmes Bend, with a Community Wide Effort here in Columbia with a Work Day at the Community and Recreation Center at 901 Hudson ST, Columbia, KY. Later in the morning, Bro. Bill Davenport's Old Sparks Mill Gradyville Annual Get-together starts at 10amCT. And up on KY 206, at Bearwallow, the Hopkins/Christine School reunion will be held at Christine, and The Taylor-McClister Reunion starts at 10amCT at Trinity fellowship hall. These are some highlights of today's EVENTS. For full details of this days, click to CM EVENTS.

Two relatively new regular entries on the Events calendar are the reminders of the Chimes heard in Downtown Columbia at Noon and in the Evening at 5pmCT. Many find the two brief musical interludes pleasant breaks which has reassurance in its six decades old tradition. The Square is again becoming an early morning gathering place. Some are wondering if programming might soon include a 7am or 8am thanks for the morning program. The chimes may not seem like a big deal, but some schedule either a visit downtown or a commute to coincide with the chimes. There are some sounds which seem to belong here. I still miss the hourly ringing of the Old Courthouse Bell, and the sirens heard all over town announcing lunch hour and return to work time at the old Sandusky Mill. How about you?

By the littles, the Square is becoming what it was meant to be. A walking campus. A concentration of the owners-in-the-store shops and restaurants. A place to saunter, to loaf, to swap tales. To be entertained and to entertain. One by one there have been more benches and seats with shade or canopies. We see more people having coffee at the tables on the Square, more folks just sitting and listening and watching and enjoying from a comfortable seat, from their favorite vantage point. The vector of progress seems right. -EW
