Little Miss Hailey is precious

George Rice writes:
Little Miss Hailey is so precious in that picture. If the saying is true that one picture is worth a thousand words then this picture would qualify for one picture worth two thousand words. I have seen that scene with my own Grandchildren and that is precious. Just reason to be proud, Grandmaw. -George Rice

Sharon Whitehurst: On biscuit shortcakes and virtual snakes

  • Like: Blackberry shortcakes with old-fashioned biscuits - over cobbler
  • Dislike: Snakes - in any form, even virtual
To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Jim prefers shortcake with old-fashioned homemade biscuits to cobbler, so that was served up with the first pickin' on Thursday.

Thanks also for the snake alert--you can add me to your unofficial list of those who do not look at snakes in any form, run-over-dead, alive or virtual!

Got a smile and a wave from Mitch Harris, every day

He was a good neighbor, and a good Christian man

Pattie McClister writes:
I was lucky to have had Mr Harris as a neighbor for over 9 years there was not a day that went by that we didn't get a wave and a big smile from him. When it came time to turn the garden he was here and gone before we got out of bed.

Never would he take a dime even for gas. He would stop in and talk sometimes because Im the last Page living on Pig Tail Ridge.

He was a good Christian man and we were so Blessed to have him as a neighbor. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. James and Pattie McClister --Pattie McClister

Tom Chaney R714: The Bookman as Detective

Of writers and their books. Review of The Cliff Janeway novels by author John Dunning. Review First printed 4 June 2006.
The next latest Tom Chaney column: Memory of Old Jack. Review of novel with Kentucky theme by Kentucky author Wendell Berry

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

The bookman as detectiveJohn Dunning hit the world of mystery writers and booksellers with a double whammy back in the early nineties.

I first came across his work about the time we opened The Bookstore. His first two Cliff Janeway novels were an immediate hit at least in the world of collectors of rare books and those of us who wish we were collectors of rare books but more often live in the world of mass market corset-rippers and self-help books.

For many years Dunning owned the Old Algonquin Bookstore in Denver. He had published a couple of interesting mysteries and had hosted a radio show in Denver -- Old Time Radio.

Poetry by Robert Stone: In Silence and in Faith

In Silence and in Faith
-a sonnet in response to "Sleeping Demon" by John Patrick Shanley
One sees no future, other sees no past
so interaction only is I can't,
but life allows no stop, no moments last,
no now escapes the din of progress' chant.

One seeming satisfies the self with change
proclaiming movement is the sign of growth
but self-deceived perceive a narrow range
with either good or bad but never both.

One once has seen but now is sightless dumb
awaiting words in silence and in faith
but ready for the dead to hopeless come
and be revived by burning of the wraith.

Stern conscience is a sleeping demon, still
but quick aroused to burn the stony chill.

  • 100 Years ago, from June 14, 2011:

There was none of this stuff of bankers turning down loan applicants while wearing golf shirts or lascivious behavior of women showing bare skin below the neck and navels. Nosirree! They had decorum and proper dress in those days, instilled through advice in the News and, no doubt, from other pulpits. There was this tip for young ladies: Keep your pins straight and stick them securely. An underskirt showing below the top skirt, looks tackey.. Connie and I moved back to Bartlesville in 1987 after I retired from Phillips Petroleum Company. One of the first things we did was remodel the kitchen. It was overdue; our house was more than 25 years old. Besides that we wanted a fresh look and smell after several years of renters. We had just sold our home on Lacy Hill in Houston and it was a downer moving back to our Bartlesville house in its condition.

Great Wooded South Lexicon X: Travel perils

Travel for erudite Kentuckians can be stressful when venturing among the unwashed, linguistically challenged, as Bradfordsvillians found when they ventured into far off Minnesota (more properly mumbled Minnansoda) and couldn't even get the answer to the most important question about breakfast.
