Joe Johnson Little League Park will remain

Nancy Taylor writes:
In response to the outpouring discussion regarding the name of the Little League park, the following statement is being released:

Please be advised that at no time whatsoever did the current Board of Directors for the Adair County Little League Baseball, Inc., ever discuss or vote to change the name of the park. The matter is simply a misunderstanding and/or miscommunication.

Due to fading issues of the various signs located at the entry of Industrial Park Drive, a contact was made to a Board member regarding the reprinting of the Little League sign. Not specifically knowing that the park itself was known as "Joe Johnson Little League Park", and without looking at the previous faded sign, the Board member requested that the "Adair County Little League Park" sign be reprinted, and that is exactly what happened. Of course, the sign will be reprinted again with the correction made.

We do however wish that communication could have come directly to a Board member, instead of going to the media first. It could have saved alot of unnecessary criticism directed at the Board of Directors, which never had any intention of renaming the park at any time. Once again, it was simply a misunderstanding and/or miscommunication.

Sincerely,

Board of Directors
Adair County Little League Baseball, Inc.

Magnolia Grandiflora blooms in Gradyville, KY

2011-06-07 - Old Gradyville RD, Gradyville, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst.
Magnolia blossom in Gradyville, KY: I have been watching the swelling buds on the magnolia tree for several days, anticipating the fragrant, waxy blooms. The first blossom probably opened on Monday as one on the horse pasture side of the tree is today crumpled and brown. Magnolias were not a part of my northern gardening experience. On our initial visit to the Gradyville farm, J.M. Shelley identified the tree for us and mentioned that this area of KY is at the far northern edge of hardiness for magnolia grandiflora. The tree towers above the one-story house, handsome in every season. -Sharon Whitehurst

Cathy Luttrell has story on parachute drop at Green River lake

They were from Ft. Knox, and it was a pretty awesome sight, even for those who have seen parachute exercises at military bases

Cathy Luttrell writes:
This was an excercise conducted by troops out of Ft. Knox. My husband is a park ranger at Green River and he said that they would be jumping from around 9:00-12:00 this past Saturday. The soldiers are required so many jumps in order to complete their training, one of which I believe, has to be into water. They decided to use Green River since it may be the closest body of water for them. They also had the soldiers families at the Corp Visitor Center for a picnic afterwards. We drove over to the dam and were able to see four of the jumpers. We had seen parachuters at Ft. Benning but this was pretty awesome to see them jumping into the water. --Cathy Luttrell

Mr. Joe Johnson has been a big part of Adair baseball history

(A note: CM has learned that there has been no change in the name of the Joe Johnson Little League Park nor has there been any discussion to do so; there was an unfortunate choice of wording on a sign to the park, not at the park. However, Little League officials, far from being upset for being possibly misread on the issue, are elated at the outpouring of affection for Mr. Johnson. They hope that that will continue and be translated into a more fitting recognition of all this wonderful man, this wonderful Adair Countian, has meant to so many, for so long. We'll have more on those developments, later. -CM)

Mayor Harris: Joe Johnson is face of Little League Baseball

'Joe Johnson is Little League Baseball around here
and it should always be that way.' -MAYOR MARK HARRIS

Comments re article 44829 Agrees with Billy Joe Fudge Leave it Joe Johnson Park

By Mark Harris
Guest commentary

Joe Johnson is the face I see when I think about Little League Baseball.

As a kid growing up my dad would always coach baseball and we would wait at the Fairgrounds for Joe to arrive.

It was always exciting when Joe would open the trunk of that old Ford LTD and that's where all the bats and balls and the bases were kept.

Great memories.

Joe Johnson is Little League Baseball around here and it should always be that way.

On a side note, we have had some calls on this and wanted to assure folks that the newly formed Parks and Recreation board has nothing to do with the naming or renaming of the Little League facility.

Thanks.
Mayor Mark D Harris

Craig Dean weighs in for keeping it Joe Johnson LL Park

Craig Dean writes:
I agree, I played there when it was already named Joe Johnson LL Park, and remember the stories people would tell about the time that Joe put in over the years out there. I remember always seeing Mr Johnson out there, sitting under the big tree by the concession stand, watching the fields and all the kids running around. He was always willing to pitch in and help with whatever was needed. I hope the hard working men and women of our local Little League baseball organization decide that it is for the best to maintain the name of Joe Johnson in the naming of the park. -Craig Dean

Early Columbia Bottlers (1910 - c. 1920)

Jim has done some powerful research and come up with the answers to questions about the Early Columbia Bottlers: Mr. W.T. Ottley, Mr. Guy Nell, Walter E. McCandless, Mr. Edgar Reed, Mr. Chelcie Barger (near Eubank Springs), and new information about the Parfay line of drinks and a chance Columbians had to get the rights to sell the Campbellsville drink: Coca-Cola
By "Jim"

Adair County News, February 9, 1910

Columbia is to have a bottling factory. Mr. [William Tanner] Ottley, who has been operating a plant at Campbellsville, in partnership with a Mr. Hobson, has purchased the entire outfit and will remove it to this place [Columbia]. It will be located near the roller mill. (This was the first mention found in the News of a bottling plant in Columbia. Before becoming involved with the above-named concerns, Mr. Ottley had briefly operated a plant in Burkesville bottling a drink called Koka Nola. The firm of Ottley & Hobson, Campbellsville, indirectly mentioned above, had manufactured a product called Dope Cola as well as "a number of summer drinks." Mr W.H. Wilson was the Columbia representative for Ottley & Hobson.)

Links: Two tech developments in the Cloud

Maybe they didn't have it in mind, but Cloud, new devices should make finding Yard Sales easier

By (1 of) CM's Tech-Impaired, Tech Consumers

With iPads and iPhones becoming so ubiquitous it's not rare to hear, "Is that my iPhone or yours"? Owning either one now doesn't brand one as a dreamer or early adopter. Either devise conveys about as much panache as owning a 1986 Taurus these days. (Folks are much more interested in unicycles; they really inspire awe and astonishment). But in today's world they're as necessary as refrigerators, maybe more useful than a car.

Now the next step, into the Cloud, has techies attention on two developments in that area and a chance for early adopters to get some attention again:
  1. Steven Jobs' announcement yesterday of Apple's iCloud, allowing a central depository for one's information, greater access to programs, and less hardware to carry around to access it. In case you didn't see the press conference, there's a good story on it at Apple's Steve Jobs unveils iCloud at S.F. event in the San Francisco Chronicle online.
  2. The buildup to the June 15, 2011, release of Google's Chromebook, which offers what may be a cheaper way to use Google's advanced set of cloud-based applications gmail users are already familiar with. The Chrome website at Chromebook is advertising, but it's easy to read (and easy to exit if you tire of it - an important CM tenet).
Easily accessible Wi-fi in Columbia make the developments in the Cloud more significant. . If the Courthouse Restoration Powers that be were to make Wi-Fi available from the old courthouse to cover the Square campus the way the Lindsey Wilson Campus has Wi-Fi, maybe that would get more busloads of Canadian tourists to stop here. And that might start the development of Alan Reed's dream of countywide Wi-Fi one day.

CM's interest, of course, is that it all makes finding Yard Sales easier. We checked out using an iPhone to find Yard Sales last Saturday, and it worked pretty good. An iPad or Chromebook ought to do even better.
