Glory days of Columbia bottling plants interest many collectors

Top valued items are My Coca bottles from Nell & Son and any of the five flavors from Grapette Bottling carry a slight premium, going for around $10-12. Some Dr. Pepper plant bottles go for $10-$20, collectors Doug Janes and Mike Schorman say.

For the past few weeks, a number of articles have appeared in CM centered around the production, in Columbia, of "My Coca," a drink which had some cocaine in it and was similar in taste to early Coca-Cola.

Since that time, two collectors, Doug Janes and Mike Schorman, have given an update on the existence of memorabilia, including "My Coca" bottles, and artifacts from several of the other bottling companies which were headquartered here.

Columbia not be most exciting city, but is great place to grow up and be from!

Becky Huffman writes:
I just wanted to say it's so nice to read the daily news of Columbia. Most other cities have reports of murders, arson and other terrible crimes, but not Columbia. It's just nice to have pictures of beautiful landscapes and stories of dogs that are lost and chickens hatching as top stories. Columbia may not be the most exciting city in America but, it's a great place to grow up and be from! Keep up the good work Columbia Magazine :) Becky Huffman

Gov. Beshear welcomes Florida crackdown on pill mills

By Kerri Richardson
News from Gov. Steve Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY (2011-06-03) - "Today, the state of Florida enacted a comprehensive bill that will help reduce the flow of illegal prescription drugs not just in their state, but also to surrounding states, including Kentucky. This bill strengthens Florida's prescription drug monitoring database, increases penalties for overprescribing narcotics, and requires new permitting processes for all pharmacies. All these steps will not only help Florida attack the epidemic of prescription drug abuse, but will also help us save lives here in Kentucky.

I have personally spoken with Gov. Rick Scott to encourage him to intensify his state's efforts to shut down these 'pill mills' because they are killing Kentuckians. In our state alone, 82 people die every month from drug overdoses. We have acted aggressively by ramping up law enforcement, enacting new policy initiatives and improving prescription drug monitoring efforts to stop the devastating effects of prescription drug abuse, but we must have cooperation from surrounding states. Choking off the pill pipeline from Florida is a key element of our strategy. Today's action in Florida is good news for Kentucky, and I applaud their legislature's efforts."

Great Wooded South Lexicon IX: Bible says Words hold power of life and death

Lesson on: Ferner, Faread, Naire, Polecat, Body man.

Previous Lexicon: Great Wood South Lexicon VIII: Some angried up words
Next Lexicon: Great Wooded South Lexicon X: Travel perils

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Department of Forestry

The Great Wooded South Lexicon is taking on a life of its own and most certainly is a team effort. More and more of you are bringing words and phrases to my attention each week. The Bible says "the power of life and death are in the tongue". If so, and I believe that it is, then what we say and how we say it takes on supreme importance.
  • Ferner: Someone from another country or simply someone not originally from here.

  • Faread: The part of the face between the eyebrows and the hairline.

  • Naire: Most commonly means neither or not.

  • Polecat: Local vernacular for skunk.

  • Body man: Person who repairs damage to the body of a car or one who rebuilds wrecked cars.
More local, language, lexicon enlightener's forthcoming as the need comes to our attention and I am thankful for all the help from CM readers and contributors. I am inspired and enlightened daily by CM and all those who make it such a special gathering place.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Being First, at Least for awhile-Champ Clark

Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. Being first, at least for a while . First published 17 September 2006, in the Hart County News-Herald
The next earlier Another Angle Rev. Joey N. Welsh: More Birthday Appreciation: Learning From Peter Shaffer

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Being first, at least for a while

All of the synoptic Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, and Luke -- contain Jesus' teaching that the human view of rank and status is seldom the divine outlook. According to Matthew 19:30, "... many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first." (NIV) The context in Matthew 19 is the story of the rich young ruler who went away in sadness after Jesus had asked the young man to leave behind his wealth and follow as a disciple. Jesus' subsequent teachings in that chapter about status and possessions end with verse 30. In Matthew 20 the parable of the workers in the vineyard concludes with verse 16: "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

Mark 9:35 describes Jesus' response after the disciples have argued about which among them was the greatest. Jesus calls the disciples aside, saying, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all." (NIV) In Mark 10 Jesus tells the story of the rich young ruler and, just as in Matthew, ends the parable by speaking of the first becoming the last. Luke 13 uses the saying in the context of Jesus' teaching about the narrow door.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Right and wrong, a sonnet

Right and wrong
-a sonnet for myself
When life is not quite right yet not quite wrong,
how easy just to settle down and wait,
unmoved by positives which swelling throng
among the negatives which would deflate.

When putting off becomes entrenched routine,
how hard is waking will to working now,
aroused by prospect of uncluttered scene
where dreams all further litter disallow.

When daily chores assist creative tasks,
how certain joy will guide to happy times,
sustained by proper choice of many masks
revealing good but hiding minor crimes.

When poets fail, there's always something worse:
The almost right, the surely wrong, bad verse.

- Robert Stone, 5 June 2011

JIM: 100 years ago - News from around the county, and beyond

Those inventive Hill Bros. of Gradyville: Armstrong Hill already had an invention for our - and New Orleans' - times: A floodproof house. Coal found at Hatcher. Acton gentleman treated mad dog bite with proven protocol of treatment: Healing by madstone. The fight at Decoration Day services at Bear Wallow. Mr. Kimble's spectacular cliff jumper mule. Judge Jones' settlement of defunct CV bank. Rev. Rowe issues statement on young widows. N.M. Tutt's high bid on Bank of Columbia stock. All this and the contemporaneously relevant advice, given then, good for today: "Do not go to church with a quid of tobacco in your mouth. Some one might reflect upon your rearing." -CM

The community newsletters of a century ago always presented interesting reading. The most frequent topics were the weather; crops (planted, harvested, withered from heat, or washed away); and visitations (who had visited whom and for how long). Singings, revivals, and social affairs drew their fair share of mentions, as did the general health of the community (who was mending, who was fading fast, and who had crossed the river).

LWC hosts school for emerging United Methodist pastors

Pastoral Ministry School at Lindsey Wilson College draws new ministers who come from diverse walks of life. For one couple, who came to the independent realization that they had been called to the ministry, attending the school helped them realize dream, and become co-pastors of a small UMC congregation in Laurel Co., KY. Others have equally fascinating stories. Many are helping fill the deep need for leadership in the denominations' smaller churches

A couple of weekends ago, I went to TPAC (Tennessee Performing Arts Center) in Nashville to see my all-time favorite play Les Miserables.

I went alone since there were only two tickets left for the Saturday night performance, and they weren't together. I certainly wasn't going to invite Guy, who hated the play the only time I did drag him along and he thought it was over at intermission.
