Haylee the boxer is home again
and the Murphy family is thrilled

She had definitely been on an adventure

To ColumbiaMagazinecom,Just wanted to let you know that Haylee came home last night. We were all so thrilled and excited to see her. We don't know where she was gone to, but she had definitely been on a big adventure. She was very tired, hungry, and thirsty. Her legs have several cuts on them and she is having trouble getting around. We figured she must have been on the run since she left. We are glad she is home!

Thanks for all your help,

s/Angie Murphy

About: Registered as Organ Donor Since 1972!

By Pam Kermeen

I have been an organ donor for years, also. When our two children passed their driving tests that was the first thing we discussed...then, we talked about who was allowed to be in the car when they drove!

A funny side-note: Daniel (Cpl Daniel Kermeen, USMC) did not want his brain to be transplanted into another person because, at the time, he was the night manager at Dairy Queen and he knew the combination to the safe! That is a dedicated employee. -Pam Kermeen

Organ Donation: Tissue can be life saver, too

'Tissue donors are definitely heroes helping to improve the quality of life for recipients of their tissue," Richard Raines writes, telling how tissue from an organ donor meant a family member could recover more quickly from knee surgery

About: An Organ Donor saved the life of beloved uncle

By Richard Raines

We hear a lot of talk about organ donation, but lately I have heard ads requesting people become an organ and tissue donor. I don't know if there is something a donor has to do to be a tissue donor, but I know that while we don't think of tissue recipients having their life saved, they have the quality of life enhanced by the thoughtfulness of others.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Punctuation a sonnet

Punctuation
- sonnet for the next day
Remembrance, celebration, service tie
together strands defining who I am,
times not of quick hello but sad goodbye,
days both of group and personal exam.

The happenings that punctuate our lives
involve sometimes just one, sometimes large groups,
unanswerable sadness oft arrives,
unseen exhilaration to us stoops.

But always days come after days recalled
with pain or happiness or often mixed,
not sure just what is still in play, what walled,
uncertain what ongoing, what transfixed.

Our arms around the things we think we love,
our minds acknowledge we know little of.

100 years ago: important news from around the county

Gleaned from the pages of the Adair County News 100 years ago

By "Jim"

Gradyville

Miss Clara D. Wilmore started for Franklin, Va., Thursday where she will teach again this year.

Miss Wilmore, then in her mid 20s, was the daughter of businessman Wm. M. Wilmore, the longtime Gradyville correspondent for the News. Miss Wilmore had attended the Lindsey Wilson Training School and had taught music there in the spring term of 1906. In the fall of 1906, she went to Edgerton, Mo., where she had charge of the English and Latin departments at the Platte School. She subsequently taught at Pine Bluff, Ark., before securing the position at Franklin, Va. Upon her appointment to the teaching position at Lindsey Wilson, the News reported that "Miss Wilmore is a lady thoroughly competent to fill this important position... Her training in music was received in a school for Young Ladies in Lebanon, Tenn."

Carol Perkins: Let's Talk About...The Flood of 2010

Carol Perkins writes memories of a scary time in Nashville, during the May 2010 flood, and the return to Edmonton, KY to find more of the same
The next earlier Carol Perkins' column in CM: Carol Perkins. When the morning began

By Carol Perkins

I drove home from Nashville that treacherous Saturday night between midnight and two in the morning. A few of my friends and I had been to a concert. Even though the rain had started earlier that day, none of us were very concerned. We should have been.

Having flown in early that evening after a two-hour delay in Austin, I realized that the rain could possibly last longer than a few hours. I thought the worst for Nashville was behind them after a long day of storms and flash floods but I was wrong. I took a cab to the arena where I connected with my friends.

I grew up liking country music despite the efforts of my mother and Miss Eleanora who taught music splendidly to dozens of local kids -- all but me.

After four frustrating years of twice weekly music lessons, Miss Eleanora told mother that her money would be better spent on anything other than music lessons for me.

When our son Paul was in Boy Scouts years ago, I volunteered as an adult sponsor, my job being to help the scout leadership on their many campouts.

One time I was a sponsor at a campout in "the woods" a few miles from home here in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. I can see in my mind's eye the location but I don't remember specifically where it was. I know it was NOT Camp McClintock near Osage Hills State Park. The camp site was in a word "primitive." There were no shelters -- nothing. It was just "in the woods" and perfect for a scout campout.

Historic Anniversaries, Unfinished Agendas. Part I

This is a time for remembering the anniversaries of some tragic and terror-laden events. Those anniversaries are more than markers for past events, however, because each date reminds us of a vast unfinished agenda for our society in this nation and for the larger human society. This is not a time for jingoism or simplistic slogans. This is a time for somber contemplation on incomplete journeys, for remembering how far we have come as well as how far we must yet go.
