Run/Walk to raise money for effort to fight breast cancer

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Relations
Columbia, KY - Four members of the Lindsey Wilson College community are lacing up their walking shoes to help fight cancer. Nicole Mattingly Huff, Sandy Moore, Rebecca Schmidt and Sarah Wilson are walking to raise money for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, the nationwide effort to raise money for breast cancer research.

The event raises money by asking participants to solicit pledges for walking 60 miles in three days. This year, the event is being held in nine U.S. cities this year. The Lindsey Wilson quartet will walk their 60 miles October 22-24, 2010 in Atlanta, GA. They each aim to raise $2,300 for the event.

On September 18, 2010 a 5K run/walk fund-raiser will be held at Lindsey Wilson. The event begins at 8amCT at the LWC Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center. The cost is $15 to pre-register, $20 on the day of the event. All proceeds support 3-Day for the Cure.

Schmidt, a LWC graduate who works in the college's computer center, traveled to Arizona in 2005 to participate in 3-Day for the Cure.

"It was amazing," said Schmidt, whose family has been affected by cancer. "Words cannot describe the experience -- there was just a crowd of pink. What I liked the most was people cheering for you and knowing that you are doing something for somebody else."

Schmidt recruited Huff, Moore and Wilson to the cause this year. Moore works in the LWC registrar's office, and Huff and Wilson are LWC graduates who knew Schmidt when they were students.

"I walk anyway, so I thought why not do it for a good cause as well," Moore said. "It's like a personal challenge for me" to walk 60 miles in three days.

Moore added: "People also become more aware of cancer and who can get it."

Huff said she has enjoyed the exercise while also doing it for a good cause.

"It really means a lot to me to be a part of this because I've known people who have been affected by cancer," Huff said.

Wilson, who lives in Albany, KY, said participating in 3-Day for the Cure has "brought a lot of awareness to my county."

Wilson said that because Kentucky's cancer rates are among the highest in the United States, her efforts have also raised awareness about cancer in general.

Preparing to walk 60 miles in three days takes a lot of training, effort and dedication. But as Schmidt pointed out, that pales in comparison to what a cancer victim faces.

"My thought is that even thought this is challenging, it's nothing compared to what someone with cancer has to endure," Schmidt said.
