Nancy Evins: I remember Daddy 'Daddy' was a small town country banker with a huge heart and a wit as well honed as Groucho's, whose advice to his newspaper carrier daughter on her first date was, 'Don't hurt him.' The writer is a resident of Lebanon, TN; who is widely published and discovered for ColumbiaMagazine.com by fellow townsperson Robert Stone. Nancy Alley Evins My father met my mother when she was only fourteen. He waited eight years to marry her. Their marriage lasted over sixty-four years until his death. He was a small town Southern banker, distinguished by his six foot three inch height, his ready wit and his unusual banking habit of trying to persuade people not to borrow money but then loaned it to people he thought were trustworthy whether they had any collateral or not. My Father, Richard Smith (1915-1992) To ColumbiaMagazine.com: My father, Richard Smith, was a special dad. I remember so many things we did when I was a child. He taught me to be honest and work hard. He would give you the shirt off his back. He never had much to give, but he would share with everyone. He taught me that my name would get there before I did. He always said a good name was to be cherished. I sure miss him this Fathers Day. All that he taught me has paid off in more ways that I can count. s/Claria Rodgers 2010-06-20 19:08:09 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Perpetual addendum: More on Lingan Selby Day By "Jim" I just heard on CNN (or some other like-minded source of High-Brow News) that today, Sunday, June 20th, is International T-shirt Day. In the immortal words of Dizzy Dean, who often was unjustly accused of steering things up, "Who'da thunk it??" All of this is prelude to ever so humbly requesting that you post the Lingan Selby t-shirt quote I inadvertently edited out of the earlier message, to-wit: Charter Member of the Lingan Selby Perpetually Perplexed Fan Club.By-the-by, Mr. Selby came up recently in ethernet conversation when an outlander friend wrote, "Oh my goodness, it's that perpetual search for the 'perfect' organization system that gets me every time!"My response, brimming over with pithy commiseration and laced with slathers of Wholesome Advice, was thus: "I've spent a considerable amount of time in the same Dithering Dilemma you so aptly describe. Our search for the perfect organization system is rather remindful of the quixotic quest of Mr. Lingan Selby of Adair County (KY). He spent many years in the early part of the 19th century toiling away on his Great Invention, utterly convinced that he was was *this close* - just one more gear, one more sprocket, one more escapement, one more drive belt - to perfecting his perpetual motion machine."CM readers who are shorter of tooth and longer of memory than I (that's just about everyone), may recall that Mr. Selby was also mentioned in the Time Travel Poll conducted by the venerable (if somewhat infamous) Cyrus, who wrote in the wrap-up to the poll after the last vote was cast, "Also of some surprise: the relatively few votes cast for...the chance to observe Mr. Lingan Selby's perpetual motion machine at work (or not, as the case may be.) Carol Perkins: Churches '...money," the writer says, 'this has split more churches than religious differences ever will. Next previous Carol Perkins column: Missing Mother By Carol Perkins Have you ever wondered why there are more Americans who don't attend church than do? Could it be that we churchgoers give religion a bad name? If a stranger sat on a cloud and hovered over a congregation - any congregation - for a month, what would he witness? First of all, he might feel tension. A church, of all places, is supposed to be free of strife, yet it is often the cause of much. I have, and so have you, participated in endless discussions over problems with simple solutions. How many committee meetings does it take to decide who is in charge of restocking the paper cups in the pantry? Who was in charge of mopping the kitchen floor the last time it was used? Silly? Of course it is. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2010-06-20 07:25:33 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Carol Perkins

Tom Chaney: Summer's Bounty Of Writers and Their Books,: 20 June 2010, Nature's BOunty The next earlier Tom Chaney column, a book review Custer Wore an Arrow Shirt a review of Edward Abby's Monkey Wrench Gang By Tom Chaney Email: Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com Nature's Bounty After a lot of years of presiding over the morning round table meetings of the Downtown Philosophical Society in the Bookstore, I have learned that topics run in almost unvarying cycles around the calendar. The earliest harbinger of spring is the first reported rainfall after the earliest member has turned up his rain gauge defying any lingering frost. Rain gets measured and discussed minutely. I have taken to jotting down amounts -- Paul showed 2.5"; George had 2.3" in his front yard gauge and 2.1" in his back yard. Therefore, it rained 6.9" yesterday with 'em all added together. Chuck Hinman, IJMA 008: My First Dance It's Just Me Again, No. 008: My First Dance The next earlier Chuck Hinman story The Grocery Cart Story Is Chuck Hinman your favorite Sunday with CM columnist, as many tell us? If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net by Chuck Hinman I was a 17 year old farm boy, just fresh out of high school. I had never had a real date, I had never danced. This looked like the perfect place to change all that. It was bound to start somewhere! This might as well be the place! I was a freshman at Peru State Teacher's College, Peru, Nebraska and I was "bright eyed, and bushy-tailed" I guess you would say! My life seemed to be just beginning in so many ways and I was ready! My hormones, whatever and wherever they are, were already dancing wildly -- and the dance hadn't even started! Welsh I always have enjoyed the work of American poet Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979). Very much a perfectionist, Bishop never allowed a large volume of work to be printed. Four years after her death Bishop's Complete Poems, 1927-1979, was published. It is a slim volume, because she never allowed anyone to see a poem unless she was completely satisfied with it and proud of it. Two lost dogs with collars, tags, visit Pike residence This morning, Saturday, June 19, 2010, we had two dogs visiting our place. One a smaller black dog with a collar and green vaccination tag, the other a larger brown and tan dog, weighing about 45 lbs, also with a collar and green vaccination tag. I could not catch them or get close enough to get the number off the tag. They stayed out in the field until around noon. Haven't seen since, but we live across from Walmart if that is a help to the owners of the missing pets.
