Fathers Day memories of Yank Loy, Sparksville, KY The place looks very different today and most of the older folks are gone. But, for me, I still remember the way things were and what a special time and place that was. -DONITA LOY HORTILLOSA Click on headline for story plus photo(s) By Donita Hortillosa My Dad was in business in Sparksville for almost 40 years. It started as a partnership that lasted about a year and then he became sole proprietor. I thought I would share a story that always touches my heart. My dad, Yank Loy, has been gone for 20 years, but that little community in Sparksville holds many fond memories for me. For many years after his death, I would run into people from the community. The first thing they would tell me was how much they missed my dad and going to the store. One of the most touching that I will never forget, was a chance meeting with Buck Scott. Buck is also gone now. I never thought of Mr. Scott as an emotional man. He was from a time, like my dad, when men didn't express their emotions. About five years after my dad's passing I had a chance encounter with Mr. Scott in the waiting room of Westlake Hospital. He stood there telling me how much he missed my dad, but the thing that surprised me the most, was as he spoke, tears were streaming down his face. While I always appreciated the comments from everyone, and there were so many, this one encounter with Mr. Scott has always touched my heart the most. Even today, after all these years, when I remember that day, the tears still come for me. The place looks very different today and most of the older folks are gone. But, for me, I still remember the way things were and what a special time and place that was. -Donita This story was posted on 2010-06-20 19:34:50
