Fathers Day 2010: Morning, Dad

By Shamarie Claiborne

A poem for my dad, Jimmy Harper. Since I was a child, my dad has called me in the mornings to ensure I was awake. After I got older, I now call him and say I am up. This poem is about my dad, that ritual, and just how much I love him.

by Shamarie Claiborne
My Dad has never failed me yet;
not always what I want, but he has never left.
He was there at 2 and 3 and 4,
and now still as I near 44.

He is a true constant in my life.
What more could a girl want, then her dad near in sight.

He thinks I'm the best more days than not,
he may not know it but I return the thought.There are no better words to hear,
than "It's OK. Dad is here"!

Through the years the best part of the day has become
when he says "I love you, girl" as we hang up the phone.

So there is no wonder, that in my world there could be no better words
than a simple 'Morning Dad!"
-Shamarie Claiborne, for Father's Day, June 20, 2010
