She was a member of a respected family with deep roots in South Adair County. She was a homemaker and the widow of Elmer Baker

Louise Baker, 83, Jeffersonville, IN, formerly of Adair Co., KY, passed away on June 14, 2010, at the Friendship House in Louisville, KY.

The funeral service will be at 11amET/10amCT, Friday, June 18, 2010, at E.M. Coots & Sons Funeral Home, 120 West Maple ST, Jeffersonville, IN. Visitation will be from 4pm-8pmET/3pm-7pmCT, at Coots & Sons Funeral Home. A graveside service will be Friday, June 18, 2010, at 1:30pmCT, at the Antioch Cemetery, 8147 Burkesville RD, in Adair Co., KY.

Obituary: Nolan Richard (Dick) Jenkins, 76, Taylor Co., KY

Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Early's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a US Army Veteran. He was a noted horseman, who was a retired exercise and assistant to five-time Horse of the Year Kelso. He was active in thoroughbred farm and horse management.

The funeral service will be at 11amET/10amCT, Friday, June 18, 2010, at the Early's Chapel United Methodist Church, Bengal RD, in Campbellsville, KY, by Rev. Paul J. Dicken. The Corporate Sponsor, Bank of Columbia, will prepare the meal, so you can count on some delicious food. There will be special entertainment, LEAD graduation, recognition of new Chamber members, and fun and fellowship. Deadline near for severe weather related jobless pay

Announcement today adds Adair, Cumberland, Green, Russell and Taylor Counties to list of counties eligible. Casey and Metcalfe were made eligible in a May 15, 2010 announcement. Farmers and self-employed may also be eligible.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 15, 2010) -- Officials from the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that 46 additional Kentucky counties have qualified for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DAU), bringing the total to 61 counties.

Kentuckians in Adair, Allen, Anderson, Barren, Bath, Boyd, Boyle, Butler, Carter, Clinton, Crittenden, Cumberland, Edmonson, Elliot, Estill, Fleming, Franklin, Garrard, Green, Greenup, Hart, Hopkins, Jackson, Jessamine, Larue, Lee, Leslie, Livingston, Madison, Magoffin, Marion, Menifee, Mercer, Monroe, Nelson, Ohio, Owen, Powell, Pulaski, Russell, Simpson, Taylor, Warren, Washington, Wayne and Wolfe counties who have lost work or whose businesses were damaged due to severe weather on May 1, 2010, may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits.

The Adair County Sportsmen's Club received the Conservation Club of the Year Award at the League of Kentucky Sportsmen's Annual Convention held Friday, June 11, 2010 in Bowling Green, KY.

The Adair County Sportsmen's Club won the statewide award largely due to their involvement with youth programs such as the very successful Kids Outdoor Day held now at Green River Lake State Park.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights (KCHR), a Listening Tour, along with an awards presentation, was held for the public at Campbellsville University last week.

The "Unbridled Spirit for Justice Award" was presented to two area leaders: John Chowning, Campbellsville University vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president, who is chair of Greater Campbellsville United, a community action group and who is also the group's founder; and Wanda Washington, coordinator of Greater Campbellsville United (GCU).

A lot more produce at Farmers Market today!

Myra Harrison called early this morning to report that the abundance of fresh farm produce at the Adair County Farmers Market at the Adair County Extension Office, is much greater, today.This morning, she said, the five vendors at the market have the following:
  • Green Tomatoes, for those Fried Green Tomatoes you've been waiting to fix, for that Green Tomato Relish which goes so well with Fried Catfish
  • New Potatoes. Both red and white. Wickedly delicious baked, boiled or fried.
  • Cabbage. Great big family sized cabbage at Margie Rooks. Cabbage for two at Myra Harrison's, and one producer has baby sized cabbage, about twice the size of Brussels sprouts, perfect for boiling or grilling.
  • Yellow Squash and Zucchini
  • BLUEBERRIES. Limited supply, but Adair County Grown.
  • Sugar Snap Peas. Regular ones, too.
  • Plants: Tomato and White Sweet Potato
  • Flowers: Marigolds and Butterfly Plant.
  • Herb Plants: Sage. Oregano. Chives. Garlic Chives. Lemon Balm. Rosemary. Cutting Celery. Every kitchen needs its own porch or backyard herb garden
  • Greens: Mustard and Kale
Producers sellling this morning are: Margie Rooks, Holly Kerns, J & J Produce - John and Joyce, from the heart of Downtown McGaha, KY; Darrell Bunnell of Coview Farms in the Village of Coburg, KY; and Myra Harrison, the Herbs and More Lady.

Myra Harrison said that a lot of people are already out shopping when the market opened this morning at 6amCT. The producers will be at the market until sold out or until 10amCT, Tuesday, June 15, 2010.

Driver injured swerving to avoid hitting deer

Incident occurs around midnight in Washington Co., KY, in northern area of Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY, service territory

WASHINGTON CO., KY - Trooper John Adams is investigating a collision that occurred at approximately 12:20amET, Tuesday, June 15, 2010 on The Bluegrass Parkway in Washington Co., KY.

Latreece Michelle Crawford, age 21, of Bardstown, KY, was operating a 2002 Oldsmobile traveling eastbound. Crawford swerved to avoid a deer, over corrected, and slid into the median.

Crawford, who was wearing her seatbelt, was transported to Springview Hospital by Washington County EMS for non life threatening injuries.

She was a member of a respected Metcalfe County family and is warmly remembered by family, friends, and customers who met her at her work at Cee Bee Foods in Edmonton, KY
Rita Phelps age 49 of Edmonton died Monday, June 14, 2010 at her home after a long, valiant battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family.

Also we want to thank the parents of Sarah, Kyle, Sydney and Chloe for their efforts. The experiences along the way to make this trip a reality are ones we will not forget. We have formed special friendships that are very dear to our hearts.

Columbia Mayor Pat Bell speaks to Rotary Club

Big events occurred in his tenure. He's presided over the landmark merger of city and county utilities. Over 600 acres were annexed to City during his administration. And a major addition to City Hall will be completed in his term.

The mayor, who announced last week he would not seek reelection said, "I'm confident I'm leaving the city in good hands."

VBS is June 14-18, 2010, at First Church of Nazarene
Columbia First Church of the Nazarene, 1200 Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY 42728, will be having Vacation Bible School June 14-18, 2010, 6-8pmCT. Children Pre-School through 6th grade are invited to attend. Children are asked to arrive 15 minutes early on Monday evening in order to be registered by the 6pmCT, start time. This year's theme is "Deep Sea Adventure -Exploring the Depths of Jesus' Love." Vacation Bible School begins at the Columbia Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA), 100 SDA RD, Columbia, KY on Monday, June 14 and will continue nightly through Friday, June 18, 2010. Registration is at 5:30pmCT on Monday evening and the following nights start time is at 6pmCT. The program is titled "Galactic Blast," It will be a space adventure while learning about Jesus' love Participants are invited to come each night. There will be space food snacks each evening.
