Adair County needs more cultural opportunities

About: Commends performers director of ACHS play production letter from Teresa GaskinsTo ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Been there, done that. I know exactly how Mrs. Gaskins feels. A fine culture that flourishes without public recognition is a culture that God will bless even in Heaven! Adair County desperately needs more cultural opportunities and appreciation of the arts.

Most sincerely,

Kentucky Color: Zebra Swallowtail and Butterfly Weed

June is a great time to slowly drive back country lanes and byways to see colorful milkweed and all the butterflies its beautiful flower attracts For next earlier Kentucky Color, see Kentucky Color - Kousa Dogweed

By Billy Joe Fudge

This Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly is feeding on nectar produced by, of all things, a Butterfly Weed. Hard to decide which is the most glorious, the butterfly or the weed.

This is the summer incarnation. Basically you can tell by the stripes. The spring version has wings which appear to be white with black stripes and the summer has black wings with white stripes. Also the tail part of the rear wings are mostly white on the summer butterfly and they are only white tipped on the spring.

Gaddie Shamrock accepts Fiscal Court terms

See full Adair County Fiscal Court meeting, June 8, 2010 REPORT

By Ed Waggener

Adair County Fiscal Court has a chip and seal contract. Fiscal court approved, conditionally, the bid submitted by the Adair County firm at its special June 8, 2010, meeting.

Judge Melton, in response to a request for an update, said that Terry Corbin, representing Gaddie Shamrock came to the CJE's office to inform the court that Gaddie Shamrock agreed to the terms the court made in conditionally accepting the Gaddie bid.

The agreement means that flood repair work requiring new chip and seal work for the county roads will proceed on schedule.

"We really appreciate Gaddie Shamrock's quick acceptance," of the conditions, Judge Melton said."Because of the May flood, we are facing a huge task to get roads ready before school starts in August. I really appreciate Terry getting back to us to put that concern behind us."

The condition was that Gaddie Shamrock would honor the terms of the bid announcement and not require that the gravel used in the paving be purchased from Gaddie Shamrock quarries.

The firm had inserted that condition into its bid, which created a conflict for the court, which had already accepted the lower materials bid from Burton Stone, another Adair County firm.

Classified Want to Buy has fascinating new entry

A special classifed was in this morning's mail. An Adair County party is looking for two heritage store fixtures from the old Montpelier Store, which is restored but not in operation, on KY 92 in Adair County in sight of the Russell County line:
Wanted - showcases from Old Montpelier Store: I am looking for 2 bow-front showcases that came out of the Old Montpelier store. The store closed out and auctioned everything in 1980 or 1981 and they had 3 bow-front showcases that were taller on each end. My husband bought one and we would like to have the other 2. Any help finding them or info leading to their whereabouts would be appreciated. You may contact me at (270) 384-5885 or email; tamaraandrew@yahoo.com. Please put showcase in the subject area as I don't open unknown emails. Thanks, Tami
The ad brings to mind a point heard often over the years: Classified ads in any media are, for many, the place to start a search for what's really going on in a community.

ColumbiaMagazine.com's classifieds definitely fit that category. Just a look at the activity in "Animals" lets the world know that we are a caring people. A look in "Benefits and Fundraisers," shows that we are a giving people. A look in "Freecycling" shows our generosity. And a look in the food categories, including "What's Cooking," let's the world know that, well, we like to eat great food. A look through "Revivals and Church Announcements" shows the the value we place on the churches' central position in lives. And of course, the great activity in "Yard Sales" shows that we are an entrepreneurial people and that we value bargains.

That list is just scratching the surface. A scan through ColumbiaMagazine.com's Classified Section quickly lets one know why we call it South Central Kentucky's Liveliest Marketplace.

There are a few more Want to Buy ads in this Free (and free for a longer period - one month or more), for individuals in Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties.
