CJE Ann Melton needs citizen help for flood damage relief

To the People of Adair County, Kentucky:

I am currently working with officials in Frankfort and Washington trying to get help for the residents of Adair County who received flood damage and for the road repairs that are needed.

I have been told that we need a complete report of damages done to residential housing, bridges, roads, business and agriculture.

The only way we can get this accurate assessment is for residents who received damage to fill out the reporting forms.

I have been informed that if you have insurance which will cover the water damage, then FEMA will not assist.

If you have received any damage from the flood and have no insurance coverage, we will have personnel set up in the basement of the Annex Building, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY starting tomorrow, to fill out the forms. I encourage everyone to stop by and fill out assistance forms if you received damage.

The times are listed below:

  • Tuesday, May 4, 2010: 8am to 4pmCT

  • Wednesday, May 5, 2010: 8am to 4pmCT
Again, I stress the importance of reporting this damage, and I am sorry that I cannot assure you that financial help will be available for sure.

I do assure that I am working diligently to obtain Financial help and the more damage we report for the private sector, the better chance we stand to receive financial help.

If you have an any questions, please email acjudge1@duo-county.com or phone (270) 384-4703.

Thank you.
Ann Melton

Mayor Bell's residence, Rice Addition, isolated by the flood

Neighborhood of some 20 homes stranded for about half a day. No major problems, Mayor Bell said, though the EMS had to come in across a field, from Stults Lane, to reach a Rice Addition address. Biggest headache is today, with finding money to pay for flood damage to the Columbia Sewer treatment plant.

In the flurry of flood news yesterday, a major story didn't get posted.

From approximately 2:30pmCT, about 20 families in the Rice Addition on Crestview Loop were cut off by flood waters for several hours, until sometime in the early hours this morning. When the Mayor awoke, he said, the road out to Greensburg Street was clear of water.

Among the stranded was Columbia Mayor Pat Bell, who said he was able to field the flood of calls he received by telephone.

Lamentations: Poke sallet blues

Mention of poke brings on cravings in Up North for Kentucky which brought-on collard greens at the Kroger's came calm down.
Poke Sallet

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Consarn it, anyways. Why did you have to go and mention fresh poke? That flung a powerful craving upon me for a big bait of water creeseys, but such things are unheard of here north of the Green River.

Roads in Adair County remain treacherous in places

While many report clear roads along entire lengths of commutes this morning, motorists who must be out are advised to take extreme caution. Water is still reported over the roads in many places, including Pelham Branch Road near the Russell Creek Bridge and below Hutchison Church, at 7amCT, Monday morning, May 2, 2010.

"Expect the unexpected" is the caveat of the day.

Billy Joe Fudge: Chance of Chance, KY Reunion?

Philosopher/Retired forester/visionary & poet raises prospect of an idea whose time is now: The obvious need to hold a huge reunion in South Adair Co. at Chance. It is a matter of providence, he says. CM thinks it Fantastic Proposal; anything which will bring busloads of Canadian tourists and can sell T-shirts has to be good.

By Billy Joe Fudge
CM fearlessly endorsed commentary

Do you suppose that by any chance and if given half a chance there would be a chance of a Chance Community Reunion? Fat chance you say? Not for me and for those who are willing to take a chance. However, I believe there is a strong chance that there is very little chance of chance but rather one of providence.

I can see, smell, hear, taste and feel it now, dinner on the ground, water troughs of iced down Pepsi, Coke, and sodas of all kinds, butcher knife bologna and cheese sandwiches, horse drawn wagon rides, saw horse and plank tables filled with history and flavor, children playing, laughter, tears of joy, Great Wooded South tours to points of interest such as the Greenbrier Ridge, Cheatham Road-Harrods Fork experience, Crocus Creek, and many others.

We, all of us, speak with reverence of cherished days gone by and lament the idea that our children, grandchildren and loved ones will not be able to experience those times of lack yet plenty. We haven't lost it. It is still here with us. All we have to do is slow down occasionally to come across it for a while.

Boil Water Advisory for Page ST service area, Columbia, KY

Dana Rogers, Superintendent of the Columbia Water Department, issued a Boil Water Advisory for the Page Street Service Area at 6:06amCT, Monday, May 3, 2010.

To define the area, he said, "Look at Columbia as a clock face, with the Russell Creek Bridge 6 and Burkesville ST at Hudson ST as 12. The area to the right of the clockface is in the Page Street Service Area."
