The biography is reprinted from A History of the Christian Churches in Adair County, Kentucky. 1990., by Paul W. Patton. The book is currently sold out, Rev. Patton said. Used with the permission of Mr. Rosenbaum's friend and author, Rev. Paul Patton, Campbellsville, KY. Rev. 'Union services between the Methodist Church and the Christian Church at Glensfork were common,' Rev. Patton says.

Old Coddger remembers Rev. H.J. Conover

He was longtime minister at Cane Valley Christian Church
About: 1933 Union Revival at Glens Fork had number of conversions by Dave Rosenbaum

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Rev. H. J. Conover was the long time minister at the Cane Valley Christian Church. I don't know if he was there in 1933, but he was the minister there in the early '50s.I was born in 1947 and I remember him being our minister. He preached either the 1st & 3rd or 2nd & 4th Sundays at Cane Valley, I don't remember where or if he preached somewhere else on his off Sundays, but something tells me he did.

I also don't remember if he quit preaching or passed away in the late '50s, as we got a new minister somewhere near '59 or '60.

His home, as far back as I can remember, was at the corner of what is now Cane Valley Road and Beechtop Road. The house is now owned by a Mr. Lee.

1933 Union Revival at Glens Fork had number of conversions

Click on headline for story plus copy of letter

By Dave Rosenbaum

As I was sorting through the effects of my Aunt Jewel Grider, I came across a hand-written account of a "Union Meeting' held at Glensfork in mid-1933."

Apparently an evangelistic meeting was conducted at the Glensfork Methodist Church with the preaching duties shared by the Rev. Warren Shipp, who I assume was the Methodist Church Preacher and the Christian Church Preacher, H. J. Conover.

Grandkids: Evan is right, after all

By Ed Waggener

Evan had a visit to his dentist for a routine check up this past week. For his bravery, the dentist gave him a reward.

The six year old was heartbroken, later in the day, when the recognition was lost, and couldn't be consoled.

His father, Pen, told him that the reward was just a cheap trinket.

Ev set him straight. "No. It's special, just for me. I had to have a tonsillectomy to get it," he said, "and I'm not going through that again!"

Even in the face of that protest, his dad tried to prove that the reward was just a cheap lagniappe, and took Evan to the computer to find the product online.

Turns out, Pen was wrong. The reward was actually quite precious, with a rather dear price of $7.50 a gross.

Pen sprung for the $7.50 and ordered 144 of the items, which Evan, deservedly, is keeping all for himself. Granddad/EW

100 years ago May 4, 1910 in Adair Co., KY

Another fascinating account of the little and big news gleaned from the Columbia weekly newspaper of 100 years ago, including the report of Lindsey-Wilson crossing bats with Roy, births, deaths, runaways, a Great Revival with 30 conversions, a ham heist crime, the reopening of Burks ridge whisky store, expansion of commerce in Breeding, and news of the Old Leftwiches, for my first wife Linda. -CM note from Ed Waggener

By Jim

In an era when telephones were rare (or nonexistent) and most roads weren't too good, community newsletters from across the county (and from surrounding counties), served as clearinghouse of information.

To steal, er, borrow, that is, from another CM contributor, "In these missives from all over the county, one found the choicest bits of news, important things like who was visiting & being visited, who was preaching (or not), who was sick, recovering, or sinking fast, who had been to town, what business and horse-swappin' was taking place, and all the other facets of day-to-day life in rural Adair County."

So, gentle reader, let us return to those less hectic days of yesteryear and take a glimpse at some of the goings-on reported in community newsletters published in the May 4, 1910 edition of the Adair County News.

Good to read of compassion for R.A.C. Martin

About: With the tolling of the bells: A sad moment in Columbia history

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Here's my comment: It's good to read that someone had compassion about the victims of a robbery and murder. Making James and his gang "the high point of our bicentennial" by re-enacting a crime is teaching children especially what we really value. . . drew big crowds . . . must have liked to see someone shot . . . and the gang is not even caught. Lets give a cheer and do it again next year!"

I have no idea what prompts leaders to choose a robbery and murder as the one big thing to celebrate. How did all the spectators explain to the children? "Why yes, the James Gang is famous - should be INfamous - because they robbed and killed a lot of people and they even came to the Bank of Columbia! Wow!! Are we proud or what?
