Why isn't the name changed to Academic Co.?

Divers opinions and remarks from North, Way North -
of Green River, Tucker Ridge, Esto and Ono, KY

  • Opposes aggrandizement of outlaws/cowards

  • Reveals no hint of stance on Prof. Azbill's electric railway to Lebanon and Creelsboro, which CM supports

  • Tantilizes readers with promise of next installment; infers more coming on the glories of the Old Turners

  • About: With the tolling of the bells: A sad moment in Columbia history

To the Editor:

I much appreciate you running the Judge Baker / RAC Martin piece. As you know from our previous conversations, I feel pretty strongly about (against) the aggrandizement of outlaws/cowards. Also, I appreciate the plug for From Hope to Hilltop.

And too, many, many thanks for posting all the news about the incredible academic accomplishments of Adair County's young folks. I would think that by now there would (should) be a move afoot to change the name to Academic County!

I'll get the next installment of "100 years ago" to you tomorrow. I think a couple of your first wife's relatives are mentioned.

-Yr. humble scribejim

Thanks, Jim. Academic County, KY, does sound great. My first wife will be very appreciative iffen you mention some of the Old Turners. It'll tickle her mama no end. -Ed

Remembering Vonda Brockman: They don't come any better

About: Remembering Vonda Brockman: Loved her, and Peggy, dearly

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Vonda Brockman was one of my dearest friends. She and her sister Peggy have been an inspiration to my life. They have always been so good to me.

Some of the most beautiful cards with handwritten messages that I have ever received came from Vonda and Peggy. No one could handle the grill at the Circle R like Vonda...the food was always delicious and she always had a smile on her face, no matter how many orders were waiting for her.

They don't come any better than Vonda Brockman. Everyone who knew her, will miss her very much. I know I will. My thoughts and prayers are with Peggy at this sad time.

With the tolling of the bells: A sad moment in Columbia history

It has to be one of the saddest times ever in Columbia, when, in Judge Hurt's words, ". . . with the tolling of the bells and with the sincere sorrow of the community, the hearse drove out of town carrying his remains for interment at his old home in Shelby county." Judge H.C. Baker, writing just over a quarter century after the crime, had no use for those who would glorify the memory of the robbery of the Bank of Columbia and the cold-blooded killing of a good man, R.A.C. Martin on April 29, 1872.
About Historian has no sympathy for the James Gang

By Jim

Were Judge Herschel Clay (H.C.) Baker around to read Mr. Saeli's commentary about the death of Mr. RAC Martin, there is no doubt the good Judge's response would be, "Absolutely, Mr. Saeli -- I agree!"

In April, 1898, Judge Baker penned for the Adair County News a lengthy article about the bank robbery and Mr. Martin's death. At the time, Mr. Baker was a young lawyer who practiced law and lived in Columbia.

The Chance Sassafras: It gave good shade in the 1940s

About: Kentucky Color: Chance Sassafras by Billy Joe Fudge

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I know that this tree was large enough to give good shade during the late 1940s because as a small boy I sat under it listening to the farmers of the community gather there to discuss many things. Billy Joe Fudge is correct: If it could only talk - the tales it could tell.
