Terry Anderson speaks at annual CU Media luncheon

Famed journalist was hostage of Shiite militants in Lebanon for seven years.
" . . . not because I believe journalists deserve any more protection than anyone else, but because I know that when any group, any government, any faction wants to oppress people, deny human rights or steal from them, they always start with the journalists because they know they can't do that in the face of a free and active press.

Commends Adair school board for Dress Code

About: Adair Co, School District Dress Code for 2010-2011

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Bravo Adair County School System!

For so long, our country has been gradually deteriorating into an "anything and everything is okay" society - individuals, particularly our young people, have cultivated a selfish mentality that has progressed to nothing is out of bounds.

It gives me hope that finally people are standing up and saying No....certain things simply are unacceptable in a civilized society.

Kentucky Color: Loblolly Dreadlock explosion

Kentucky is most northern state where this species thrives
For next earlier Kentucky Color, see Kentucky Color: Fog Pearls

By Billy Joe Fudge
Retired District Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry

Although Loblolly is not really native to Kentucky, we have multiple tens of thousands of them growing across our state thanks to the Kentucky Division of Forestry. Close to 25,000,000 acres of the South is covered by pine and Loblolly covers close to half those acres.

Loblolly is generally labeled Southern Yellow Pine at your local building supply and is a major supplier of pulp for the paper industry. It is also an important component in the manufacturing of some types of plywood.

Loblolly has needles up to 10 inches in length and is one of the fastest growing pines. It is a self-pruner which means when a limb is shaded it dies and falls off. It doesn't do well North of Kentucky because of the cold winters plus it is very susceptible to breakage due to ice and snow.

In case you were wondering, Loblolly is Southern for "mudhole".
